IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON AGRICULTURE IN
BANGLADESH

The pandemic COVID-19 has slowed down human activities globally and
throwing countries into economic depression. Bangladesh, a growing
economy, is also experiencing severe economic damage. Bangladesh is
not new to major humanitarian crises. Earthquake, flood, cyclone, climate
change is a very common issues of this country. This country is currently
fueling worlds largest refugee camp despite having a weaker economy.
But COVID 19 is a whole different crisis where immediate response without
any hesitation is a must. Government and private sector have already
come forward for fighting against this deadly virus. But due to its own
nature worldwide countries were following lockdown protocol. Thus,
worldwide economy, business, politics were greatly hampered. Bangladesh
is also facing the shockwave in all the sector specially agriculture sector.
Because of the lockdown situation and zero trade rate, already in around 2
million people lost their job in the export-oriented garment industries of
Bangladesh. The deadliest problem is feeding the whole country when
there is almost no trade going on in markets and having an inadequate
supply of food. The food crisis has become a major issue for Bangladesh.
Every day the number of Covid-19 affected patients is increasing and the
food supply is decreasing. The communication system was down whole
throughout the country. Farmers couldn’t take care of their crops with
proper essentials. There was shortage of seeds, pesticides. Later on, when
they were prepared for selling their crops, the whole market place was
shutdown. They didn’t get their fair price. Because of the shutdown of
communication, the farmers were heavily affected. They got trapped by the
miscreants who took advantage of the market situation. So, this alarming
situation which is prevailing currently needs to be viewed with utmost
importance. But there is not enough organized literature about this recent
issue. This paper tried to accumulate the major findings as well as valuable
information from secondary sources like website, published research
articles, and newspapers about Covid-19 and how its effect on agriculture
sector of Bangladesh

Research Question

Primary research question:

1. How the agriculture sector of Bangladesh is affected because of COVID-19 ?
2. How can we overcome this current situation ?

Rational of the study

As I mentioned above the food crisis has become a major issue for
Bangladesh. Every day the number of Covid-19 affected patients is
increasing and the food supply is decreasing. People are becoming jobless,
homeless. Farmers are passing their day fighting with hunger as they can’t
produce crops because of the lockdown situation and collapsed market.
With this whole country’s economy is getting affected severely. That is why
I want to analyze how the economy is getting affected and how can we
overcome the situation in this paper.

Objective:

The objective of this research paper is to find out the possible reason
behind the agriculture sector failure and to find out if there is any solution of
it or is it going to prevail much longer amongst us side by side with COVID-
19 pandemic.
Methodology of the Research
As this research’s aim is to analyze the impact of COVID – 19 on
agriculture sector of Bangladesh, I will emphasize on qualitative analysis. I
shall analyze both primary and secondary data for this research. For
primary data I will interview some farmers, agriculture researcher, experts.
And for secondary data I will analyze report, published articles, relevant
news regarding the impact of COVID 19 on agriculture and economy of
Bangladesh.
