1. Ensure that you utilize implicit teaching strategies by modelling the exact process for solving
word problems and using counting up strategy or manipulatives
2. Reinforce word problem steps prior to student independent work

Overview of the lesson:

Mariam began the math lesson by reviewing the virtual classroom rules and the morning
calendar routines were the students had to identify the days of the week, months of the year,
attendance. Students were randomly called upon to answer the question.

She then reviewed yesterday’s lesson on adding two-digit numbers using simplification (25 +
55; 20 + 5 + 50 + 5). Mariam called on a student to help her solve the problem. Next she stated:
Today we learn about problem solving using adding two-digit numbers. She then told the
students the clue words that help them to identify if the problem will be addition. She then
modelled how to solve a word problem and asked the students to identify the clue words that
helped them identify if the word problem is addition, numbers to add together. Students
struggled with this concept.
 Excellent job of randomly calling upon students to answer the questions posed to them 
Question to Consider: (1) What strategies can be used to help students visual identify the steps
involved in solving word problem? Think about the importance of implicit teaching & writing
the steps. For example:

1. Identify the clue words: more, sum, total, in all, etc.

2. Identify the numbers in the problem
3. Solve the equation
(2) What strategies can be implemented to help students with counting quickly. Think about the
counting up strategy.
Next, she asked the students to go to Math book 2, pg. 208 and solve the word problems on
that page. Once time was up, Mariam called upon students to share their answers, explaining
the process on how they got the answer. Students were then instructed to use the link in the
chat box to complete the quiz.

Action Plan:
Managing and Implementing Learning:
 Ensure that students learn the exact process for solving word problems by using
implicit teaching so students can identify the steps involved in solving word
problems.
 Reinforce word problem solving steps prior to independent work
