Directions for Full Credit: Use the think-aloud strategy planning sheet below to plan your strategy instruction. Please submit
this completed template to Canvas with the reflection.

Name: Kayla Guyer

Strategy: Math Word problems
Content Area and ELA Standards:
Math: 8.EE.C, 8.EE.C.8: Solve mathematical problems and problems in real-world context leading to
two linear equations in two variables.
ELA: 8RL.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and
connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or
allusions to other readers.
Objective:
Students will determine the word problem's meaning in a word problem and solve it to a 80% accuracy.
:*You may use bullet points if desired in the blue sections below*

Strategy Awareness & Explanation (Purpose for selecting the strategy)

How will we provide students with a clear picture of the why and how?
- Reviewing previous knowledge before going into the word problem
- Breaking down the word problem into sections
- Providing them with a layout of how I would like for them to break it down

Strategy Demonstration & Modeling (Think Aloud)

How will you model, explain, practice, and reinforce the rules or procedures of the strategy?

Guided Practice
How will you have students practice the strategy with support?
- We will do one with the strategy and the chart and then have them help me do it
with another one. Then have them do one and check answers.

Strategy Application
How will students apply the strategy independently?
- Highlighting words they know and then highlighting with another color what they
need to find out.

Reflection Write a 2-3 paragraph detailed reflection about your teaching experience based on your
self-assessment.
● How did the structure (awareness & explanation, demonstration & modeling, guided practice,
application) help support your instruction and student learning?
● How does this strategy support learning in your discipline, specifically?
● What were your strengths and areas for growth (please consider both your planning and your
instruction of the strategy)?

1. Doing this structure with no students in the video was a little hard for me because, yes, I could
not show my students how to do things. Being able to do this in a live class would help the
students to see this being done. I believe that this is the right way for students to see how
things get done. A video that I am recording for students should just be done by walking them
through how to do it.
2. This helps our students see a way that they can walk it out in a math problem and grow from
there. Students should be able to talk out issues so that they know the understanding of what is
the reason why we are doing this.
3. The strength of this was the idea that students get to see them being worked out. Areas to
grow would be how you would do this for a recorded lesson. What happens if the students
aren't participating? Are you willing to keep it all going?
