2. Reducing L.O. Consumption on 6DS-26 Engines

SK-8707

The following counter measure is effective in

order to reduce L.O. consumption on 6DS-26
engines.

Each piston has six (6) oil holes located below

the bottom groove of the piston crown (just
below the oil scraper ring in figure 2). By
plugging these holes, the flow of lub. oil through
the holes is restricted and fewer demands are
placed upon the oil ring and oil scraper ring.

Procedure

a. The piston should be removed from the engine

entirely.

b. Locate the six oil holes of 5mm diameter just

figure 2 below the piston crown (figure 2).

c. Tap the oil holes with 6mm x 1.0 pitch (figure

3).

d. Make six aluminum (Al) plugs as M6 x 1.0

(figure 4).

e. Plug the holes with the aluminum plugs

applying adhesive paste ROCTITE.

f. Make sure the aluminum plugs do not protrude

from the hole into the inner cavity of the piston.

g. Caulk the plugs with a center punch to fix

figure 3 them into place.

h. File any sharp threaded edges and replace

piston into the engine.

Note:

In addition to plugging the oil holes, it is suggested that the cylinder liner surface is inspected for
excessive partial wear that may increase L.O. consumption due to leakage into the combustion
chamber. Excessive wear should be rectified by honing of the cylinder liner.
