Circulating water pumps supply cooling water at the required flow rate
and head to the power plant condenser and the plant auxiliary cooling
water heat exchanger. The circulating water pumps must operate
economically and reliable over the life time of the plant. Total 03 pumps
for single unit.

3. Safety Precaution during operation:

Ensure no permit to work is pending on regarding this system by checking with


EE/FE.
4. Pre Start Procedure:
1. Ensure no permit is pending on the system
2. Power and control supply are healthy.
3. Ensure healthiness of alarm/Trip setting for system
4. Ensure discharge valve is in close position
5. Ensure all protection are working

6. Ensure the oil level in the bearing are normal(Thrust Brg. & motor NDE
side)
7. Ensure temperature and vibration probes are fitted and in working
condition.
8. Ensure air venting of pump and other piping is done
9. Condenser water box drain should be open of both pass A &B
10. Condenser water box vent should be open of both pass A&B
11. CW pump bearing sealing & cooling valve should be open & charged.
12. Fore bay level should be normal.
13. Condenser CW inlet valve & outlet valve of both pass should be opened

5. Start Permissive:
1. CW pump can be started provided following permissive are
available
a. Discharge BFV is 100% closed.

b. Motor DE bearing temp. are not high (<100˚C)

c. Motor NDE bearing temp. are not high (<95˚C)

d. Motor stator winding temp. not high (<130°C)

e. Pump thrust bearing temp. not high(<75°C)

f. Emergency stop push button near motor is not operated

g. Pump reverse rotation is not detected.

h. Sump level is normal (R.L 338.015meter)

i. Fore bay level normal.(≥337.5m)

j. HT switchgear breaker in service mode

k. HT switchgear breaker in remote mode

m. The pump set have not completed the limit of (3 cold start or 2Hot

start)

n. Seal water flow to thrust bearing is not low(>45lpm)

o. Interconnection valve of standby pump are closed

p. Incase other pump not running, discharge butter fly valve of stop

pump fully closed

Note-: CW pump “ON” command can be given after all the above condition

is satisfied.

2. After CW pump has started:

a. Command shall be given to open discharge BFV 100%

b. Motor space heater shall automatically switch off from the

switchgear

3. Starting sequence for next CW pump(One CW Pump is already in

operation)

a) Starting of next CW Pump is to be prohibited for

approximately 120-300 seconds from start of first CW PUMP.

b) Other sequence for stating of this pump will be same as that

indicated in clause 1 above

6. Starting Procedure:
1. Confirm from local operator that Pump is running in normal condition
2. Check the discharge pressure, current, bearing temp and vibrations of
system is normal
3. Close all line and Pump air vents after proper venting of the system
4. Check for any oil leakage from the bearing.
5. Check for any water leakages from the pump glands and CW line
6. Record the reading –current, bearing temp. & temp. or vibration
7. Tripping Condition:

As per O& M Current working Time

8. Stopping Procedure:
1. 100% close command shall be given to pump discharge BFV
2. When BFV is closed up to 80% (Limit switches provided) (Settable at site)
STOP COMMAND shall be given for CW motor.
3. Ensure BFV is 100% close within specified time (30-80 sec adjustable).

9. Isolating Procedure / Safety aspect:


1. Electrical Isolation (CW Pump in stopped condition)
a. Follow the proper procedure for isolation
b. CW Pump breaker taken in local mode ,DC supply OFF and main
breaker racked out and tag with PTW number and lockout
c. CW Pump emergency push button pressed
2. Mechanical Isolation (CW Pump in stopped condition)
a) Follow the proper procedure for isolation
b) Discharge Valve should be in close condition
c) CW pump bearing sealing & cooling valve closed

b. Refer breaker and module nos. in power supply details

10. Emergency Operation:


1. CWP suction (for bay) level should be maintained (338mtr). If the suction
level is going low start the CT make up. Also the level is going below 2 m
immediately stop the pump and reduce the load.
2. If the lube oil level is low-check drain valve is in closed position and make
up the oil
3. Check oil leakages in the system.
4. If vacuum of condenser decreases sharply, and exhaust temperature of LP
cylinder rises- Check CW temperature and if standby pump is available
start the pump and increase CW flow.
5. If Pump bearing temp rises -Check bearing oil level, quality and make-up
oil.
6. If the Pump Vibration is high-Check Pump Discharge Butterfly valve is full
open
7. In case of abnormal sound from Pump ,smoke spark stop the pump
and run the standby pump and issue permit for the faulty pump
