1.) Mrs. Stela is a teacher in St. Xavier School.  She teaches social studies to students of
Grade 9.  She observed that a child name Maria in her class was continuously getting less
marks in her subject. Subsequently, she scored 75 in her first unit test, 70 in 2nd unit test,
and her marked was reduced to 35 in the quarter test.  It made Mrs. Stella to think that
there are some difficulties with Maria.  If you are Mrs. Stella:

a. How would you assess Maria’s situation?

If will assess Maria’s situation, I would think that there might be something wrong
with my teaching process or there might be personal issues that distracts in her
studies. Student who has the same situation with Maria, really needs a high attention
and quick response not only form the teacher but also from the parents or guardians.
If will find out that Maria perceived my teaching strategy difficult I will going to
adjust in order to help her overcome her difficulties, meanwhile, if she has personal
issues and problems, it would be best that her parents will know since they are the
ones who knows very well to their daughter.
b. What kind of the intervention/s you would do to help her cope up with her
studies?
As the Teacher, there’s a lot we can still do to help and it’s our responsibility to do
all we can. In Maria’s situation, I think the best interventions I would do to help her
cope up with her studies is first, talking to her privately or when her classmates is not
yet around. I will ask her on how she perceived my lessons or classes, and if she is
comfortable with the classroom environment. With that, if I will know if there is/are
something that she didn’t like, I can able to adjust or improve the things, but of course
without compromising the whole class. Second, I would try to ask some personal
questions to her, but I will not force her to respond and I will accept if she will refuse
to answer. By doing this, I will able to know about her personal issues that affect her
studies, because maybe she may have a lot in her mind and what she needed is
someone who will listen to her. And lastly, I would encourage and let her feel that she
is important. I would also praise even the smallest achievements that she had and tell
her that she will succeed. Because it will help her to uplift her spirit and give her a
positive insights in life.

c. What type/s of evaluation would you use to be able to help Maria overcome her
learning?
To help Maria overcome her learning, it would be best that before the another term
will start, I will let her first undergo the diagnostic evaluation. This would help me to
identify her gaps over her classmates and would guide me also on what appropriate
instructions and strategies suited to her learning capabilities. Furthermore, through
this assessment I will able to find out on what are her strengths and weaknesses and
where areas she will excel and not into.
After this one, I will pay more attention in conducting formative assessment, like
regular classroom observations and engaging classroom activities such as
brainstorming or debates to ignite her interest to participate in class and for me to
provide feedback on her daily progress in class.
d. Critically discuss with examples, how placement, formative, diagnostic and
summative evaluation are used in you school

 Placement Evaluation
This assessment is conducted before the organization of teaching – learning
activities to measure the entry behaviour or previous knowledge of the learners.
The purpose is to know whether the learner is able to acquire the new learning
experience which is related to the previous knowledge. In schools and
universities, placement evaluation is usually used to “place” student into a course,
course level, or academic program.
Examples of Placement Evaluation is through placement testing. In senior high
school, students are assess if they are ready and qualify to enrol in the academic
strands they have chosen---ABM(Accountancy and Business Management),
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), HUMSS
(Humanities and Social Sciences), GAS (General Academic Strand). While in
Colleges and Universities, first year incomers usually undergone placement
assessment like IQ tests, Aptitude and Proficiency Test and etc. to determine if
what appropriate courses and programs suited on their capabilities and skills.

 Formative Evaluation
This evaluation is conducted during the teaching – learning process and it is
carried out from the very beginning of instruction and continues till the end of
course. In the school, formative assessment is used by teachers to change a
teaching method or if they will move on in the next topic. It’s the responsibility of
the teacher to find out if their students understand or not what is being taught,
since students may always have misconception on the lesson. Poor teachers
continue to teach whether or not the students understand, while great teachers use
formative assessment to make a decision to re-teach or move forward.
For examples, “The hand signal: One to Five”. This activity formatively assess
students by having them rate their understanding from scale of one to five using
their fingers. One finger means student is absolutely lost, two fingers if student
has a vague idea, three fingers if they are in the middle, four fingers means they
have a good understanding, and five fingers if they acquire mastery on the topic.
Another example is the brainstorming. This activity take place before
introducing a topic. Teachers use brainstorming to gain an idea on what is
students already know about the topic.

 Diagnostic Evaluation
Diagnostic evaluation provides information essential to teachers in selecting
relevant learning outcomes and in designing appropriate learning experiences for
all students, individually and as group members. In the actual classroom setting,
Diagnostic assessment usually used by teachers to help them identify the student
gaps that will guide them in future instructions. However, it should not be given
too often. When it given, it should be before starting a course or unit. And not for
grading purposes but rather for the teachers reference.
Like for examples, during the first day of school, teacher should be always
reminded that in any given classroom, not every student are at the same level, and
also, not assume that all students have the prerequisite skills necessary for the
class. Hence, this is where diagnostic evaluation come into play. Teacher may
conduct a “Textbook Pre-Course Test” or diagnostic questionnaires to easily see
what a student knows at the beginning of the year. It help teachers also to detect
what areas need more improvements and where to direct instruction. Additionally,
a teacher may also conduct a Teacher-Designed Test to come up with more
personalize diagnostic assessment result.

 Summative Evaluation
Summative Evaluation is an activity that determine knowledge, skills, abilities,
and attitudes that students have developed over a given period of time; to
summarize student progress; and to report this progress to students, parents /
guardians, and teachers. In school, summative assessment is absolutely necessary,
because students in school need to master a certain skill and knowledge to
succeed in life.
Since summative assessment is something that the teacher is planned for,
student should be given time to study and prepare. Some examples of summative
assessment in school is first the tests, which can be standardized and created for
midterm and final. Second is essays, because this activity requires higher order
thinking skills and depth questions. Third one is the portfolio. Portfolios are great
alternative assessment for students who struggles the test taking skills. And lastly
teacher may also conduct presentations as summative assessment. Students who
able to present means they have mastery on the course and developed their
communicating skills.
