1. Differentiate between the two major purposes of assessment in Social Sciences?

The two major purposes of assessment in Social Science are Assessment for
Instructional Purposes and the Assessment for certification. In assessment for
instructional purposes, the teacher conducts a keen observation towards his/her students
in order to decide on what appropriate approaches should he/she implement to help
his/her students overcome their learning difficulties. It usually includes engaging
activities such as debates, peer and group discussion and etc. where learners could
showcase on what are their strengths and weaknesses. To sum it up, the major purpose of
this assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be
used by educators to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.
Meanwhile, in Assessment for Certification, its major purpose is to assess student
learning and overall competencies at the end of the instructional module. It usually
includes term end examination or semestral end examination to measure the range of
learnings that the student learned in a specific period of time. Furthermore, this kind of
assessment can be used to determine the quality or value of a program

2. Which among the two major purposes of assessment do you think would best
assess the learner’s capability? Why?

As a teacher, it is our responsibility to find out if our student does not understand what
has been taught. And it could be surely possible if we will going to assess the students’
learnings during the teaching process by integrating the Assessment for Instructional
Purposes. This kind of assessment for me would be the best way to assess the learners’
capabilities as it provides early direct data and information to the teacher if whether
he/she will reteach or move forward to another lesson. This assessment also includes
engaging activities such as debates, brainstorming, and peer discussion that could help
the teacher to measure easily the specific strengths and weaknesses of his/her students.
Formative assessment is more important for a day-to-day perspective and significantly
impact student achievement when used correctly. It can be observational, questioning,
discussion, or peer and self-assessment strategies. Hence assessment for instructional
purposes is the best way to assess learners' capabilities.
