Types of Engines

Probably the most intuitive way to differentiate between them is the type of energy each
engine uses for power:

1-Thermal engines (requires a source of heat to convert into motion.)

• Internal combustion engines (IC engines)

• External combustion engines (EC engines)
• Reaction engines

2-Electrical engines
• Ion drives
• EM drives

3-Physical engines ( rely on stored mechanical energy to function.)

• Clockwork engines,
• pneumatic engine
• hydraulic engines
Classification of Engines

Engines are classified on the basis of the folowing factors:

No. of Cylinders
Nature of Combustion No. of Strokes
Arrangement of Cylinders

Type of Ingnition

Design Fuel Used

Types of cooling

Valve Arrangement
Cycles of operation
Method of Fuel Ignition
