Aphasia studies comprise a multidisciplinary field that clearly reflects the "Neuro-Linguo-
Psycho-Social" nature of the object of its research - aphasia. The theoretical analysis of the
approaches, starting from the very first descriptions of the phenomenon up to present, reveals the
history of the field as a spiral process unfolding towards holistic development. On the one hand,
modern neurovisual studies return to aphasia as an anatomical disorder and re-focus on
localization approach but, on the other hand, there is strong psychosocial perspective, which
together with consideration of the patient's phenomenological experience, plays one of the most
crucial roles in neuropsychological rehabilitation process and helps people with aphasia to regain
the quality of life and psychological well-being, regardless existing speech and language
disorder.
Since aphasic syndrome is not limited to mere speech/language or even communication disorder,
but presents personal changes as well, one of the prospects for further development of aphasia
studies lies within the Uznadze Psychology of Set which in the context of holistic
neuropsychological rehabilitation acquires a special significance. One of the key issues is to
determine whether the primary, i.e. actualization, mechanism is distorted or whether the
problem is in fixed sets. It may also appear that it is the synergy effect of these mechanisms
that triggers aphasia symptomatology. It is not excluded that the interplay of non-
communicative latent sets also forms the manifested picture of the disorder. Research and
correction of sets, determining aphasia, open up new opportunities in the sphere of holistic
neuropsychological approach.
