Lesson Plan in Mathematics 10

I. Objectives

At the end of the session, 75% of the students should be able to:

a. Distinguish the rules in permutation to be applied in a given problem.

b. Value the importance of solving a problem in real life.
c. Solve problems involving the different kinds of permutation.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Solving Problems involving Permutation

Material: Laptop, Projector, Chalk, and Board
Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Module 10 – pp. 283-300.

III. Teaching Strategies:

A. Review
Direction: Check whether the following problems are applied in Rule 1, Rule 2, Rule 3
and Rule 4.

Problem Rule 1 Rule 2 Rule 3 Rule 4

In how many ways
can seven people be
seated in a round
table?
How many ways can
4 members of the
family be seated in a
theatre if the mother
is seated on the aisle.
Number of ways to
arrange 5 students
from 8 students
The number of ways
to arrange 23
different objects.
How many
distinguishable
permutations exist for
the letters in the word
TENNESSEE?

B. Motivation
Guide Question:
1. What are the 4 ways to solve a permutation?
2. What are the formulas for each permutations?
C. Lesson Proper

1. Activity
Direction: Match column A in Column B with corresponding
formulas.

A B
1. The number of possible objects taken r at n!
a time. a. nPn= p ! q ! r !

2. The number of permutations of n distinct n!

objects arranged at the same time. b. nPr=
( n−n ) !
3. The number of ways arranging n objects c. P= ( n−1 ) !
of which q, r, s, so on and so forth are of the
same kind.
4. The number of arrangements of n distinct n!
objects around a circle. d. nPn= ( n−r ) !

2. Analysis

Direction: Observe the two out of four different kinds of

permutations and apply the following formulas:

Rule no. 1: The number of permutations of n distinct objects

arranged at the same time.
n!
nPr=
( n−n ) !
Rule no. 2: The number of possible objects taken r at a time.
n!
nPn=
( n−r ) !

Rule no. 3: The number of ways of arranging n objects of which p, q, r, s,

so on and so forth are the same kind.

n!
nPn=
p!q!r !

Rule no. 4: The number of arrangements of n distinct objects

around a circle.

P= ( n−1 ) !
Questions:

1. We have 5 passengers and there were only 3 vacant seats.

In how many ways can we arranged the 5 passengers?

2. In how many different integral numbers may be express by

writing the 5 significant digits in succession, each figure to be
taken once, and once in each number?

3. In how many ways can 6 people be seated at a round table?

4. Find the number of distinguishable permutations of the

letters of the word PHILIPPINES.

3. Abstraction

 How can we distinguish the formulas of permutation?

 What are the 4 formulas for permutation?

Values Integration: What is the importance of solving

problems in our daily lives?

4. Application

Direction: Answer the following questions.

Stone, 4 copies of the Lost Symbol, 5 copies of The Secret of
the Unicorn. In how many ways can you arrange these books
on a shelf?

2. In how many ways can seven people be seated on a

round table?
3. There are 720 ways for 3 students to win first, second, and
third place in a debating match. How many students were
competing?
4. In how many ways can the letters W, X, Y, and Z be
arranged in a row?
5. In how many ways can you arrange the letters of the word
“ELAINE”.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Show your neat and clean solution to find the permutation.
1. How many distinguishable permutations exist for the letters in the word
CARAGA?
2. In how many ways can eleven people be seated in a round table?
3. How many ways can 5 members of the family can be seated in a theatre if the mother
is seated on the aisle.
4. Number of ways to arrange 6 students from 9 students.
5. There are 720 ways for 4 students to win first, second, and third place in a debating
match. How many students were competing?
