2. How do you value cultural heritage and express pride of place without being ethnocentric?
Xenocentrism is the preference for the products, style, culture, people,
significant others, and food of others, rather than of one's own.
Both xenocentrism and ethnocentrism are a subjective take
on cultural relativism.

Human Society is characterized by a territorially localized population; the members of which interact in a network of
relationships, which are distinctive, culturally defined and limited, and affectively bonded by common linguistic patterns and other
forms of symbolic representations.
Society arises only when individuals are knit together in a network of mutual stimulus and response. In other words,
society exists when social beings behave toward each in ways determined by their recognition of one another.
Culture is “the complex whole which encompasses beliefs, practices, values, attitudes, laws, norms, artifacts, symbols,
knowledge, and everything that a person learns and shares as a member of society”. This is set of behavior and the fact that
humans are characterized by them by virtue of being born as “human beings” apart from other creatures in the animal kingdom
suggests the universal nature of the concept. They are behaviors that people possess which other primates do not.
Each culture differs from another as each defines reality differently. As a result, some people find it difficult to get along
with or understand other people’s way of thinking and doing. Moreover, each group tends to believe that its view of reality is right
and proper and anything outside its context is absolutely the opposite.
Members of a particular society have the tendency to regard its culture as the best and more superior compared to another
society. A good example is the Chinese people’s feeling of superiority anchored on the so-called “middle kingdom complex.” Such
mentality is based on the popular belief in ancient China that they lived at the center or middle of the world and those outside of
their domains are barbarians.
To mitigate the negative effects of ethnocentrism, it has been suggested that cultural relativity be popularized. Advocates
of cultural relativity ore relativism assert that cultures must be viewed and analyzed on their own terms, in the context of their own
societal setting.
This approach proposes that one must suspend judgement on other people’s practice in order to better understand them in
their own cultural terms. Through cultural relativism, one can gain a meaningful view of the values and beliefs that underlie the
behaviors and institutions of other people and societies.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT #2
No. To clarify, a culture represents the beliefs, practices and artifacts of a group, while society represents the social structures and
organization of the people who share those beliefs and practices. Neither society nor culture could exist without the other.
As a means of communicating values, beliefs and customs, it has an important social function and fosters feelings of group identity
and solidarity. It is the means by which culture and its traditions and shared values may be conveyed and preserved.
3. To ensure the continuity of Philippine culture, how can you contribute in the preservation of tangible and intangible forms of
culture?
To ensure the continuity of Philippine culture we should preserve it in any ways and forms we can. Just like the ancient craft that
were discovered. They must be put into a museum to preserve such precious items from our history that signifies how our ancestral
lived before colonization or even after colonization.

What does the picture tell? Write a short essay about it and explain how can you help to mitigate ethnocentrism?
It's easier to find remedies for racism and violence in the fictional world. But what about in real life? In her essay for NPR, Butler
asks: What would make us more tolerant, more peaceful, and less likely to need a UN Conference on Racism? Her sobering
answer is "nothing at all." It's natural for humans to feel superior to each other, she concludes, and there would be intolerance even
if we were all the same color.
