Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
This experiment uses baking soda or sodium bicarbonate to determine the
effectiveness on its characteristic as anti-fungal infection in a way of plant-fungal
treatment. A fungus is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes
microorganisms such as yeasts and molds. According to Aram, MD and Inverso,PhD
(2015), a fungi grow by shedding tiny spores in the air. In which a human can easily
inhaled it or land on the skin. A construction or demolition sites, barns, unclean houses
dusty offices or even dark caves are good locations for a high concentration of fungus.
However, plants make their own food in sunlight and carbon dioxide while a fungus is
not a plant but they get their food from other sources like a living or dead animal this
includes humans. When a fungus enters the body it has a possibility that will
compromise the immune system that spread and invades to the tissues and can also
assail the blood vessels that will cause infection in the blood stream.

On the other hand, according to Cory Wheelan (2019), baking soda has a high
positive effect on a fungal infection specifically yeast (a type of fungus). It can treat
itchiness and redness. A Candidiasis is a common fungal infection caused by yeast
according to CDC (2020). It can normally lives on the skin and inside the body that may
cause a huge problem for those people with diabetes. Based to the article of
Diabetes.co.uk (2019), people that have a high sugar levels lead to the better condition
for the yeast to grow. These activities of the fungus inside of a human body will
somehow affect the immune system that can lead to a serious disease. This
experimental study is determining effectiveness of baking soda in order to evaluate new
ideas in the field of medicine. The researchers are using a plant that exposed in a
fungus as a scale to measure the comparative quantity.

Statement of the Problem

1. How effective is baking soda for a fungal infection?
2. What is the significance of this study to the human body system?

Scope and Delimitation

The study mainly focused on determining the effectiveness of baking soda in anti
fungal treatment. To measure the plant-fungal treatment, the researchers used the
comparative scale as their basis in measuring the how effective baking soda is. This
study will be conducted with a duration of 3 weeks that includes replication of the
samples.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature which the researchers found useful on
the development and to be the relevant to the study.

According to Bonnie L. Grant (2021) Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has

been touted as an effective and safe fungicide on the treatment of powdery mildew and
several other fungal diseases. Recent studies confuse the efficiency of using this
common household item. The compound seems to prevent some fungal spore flare ups
but doesn’t kill the spores.
Moreover, Baking soda on plants causes no apparent harm and may help
prevent the bloom of fungal spores in some cases. It is most effective on fruits and
vegetables off the vine or stem, but regular applications during the spring can minimize
diseases such as powdery mildew and other foliar diseases.
Hunt (2020) stated that Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, is
occasionally recommended for controlling fungal diseases in plants.

RELATED LITERATURE
Apparently, according to the article of Gardening Know How (2021) baking soda
or sodium bicarbonate will disrupts the ion balance in fungal cells which causes to
collapse. This may help to prevent the bloom of fungal spores.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology that refers to the analysis of the methods
used appropriate to a field of study. It is a systematic way of accomplishing certain tasks
and defines as a collection of procedures, tools and research design that helps the
researchers in data gathering.

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study will use a experimental type of data gathering in which a scientific
approach is recommended, where one or more independent variables are manipulated
and applied to one or more dependent variables to measure their effect on the latter.
