Reflection Paper: Every Child is Special

Every child is different. They have their own character which they show in various

ways, they are special.

The movie is about an eight years old boy named “Ishaan Iwasthi” who suffers

from a reading disability due to problems identifying speech sounds called dyslexia. He

was a playful child but he was having a hard time dealing and coping in school as he

can’t write nor read letters properly. No matter how hard he tries to understand and read

books, the letters and words kept on dancing and changing in his eyes are the reason

why his classmates make fun of him. His teachers and parents failed to notice his

disability and struggles as they thought he was a playful and mischievous child always

messing around and couldn’t take things seriously. He was always being compared to

his older brother who is smart according to his parents and teachers.
He was later transferred to a boarding school with a strict learning process to be

disciplined and productive however, this just makes him more confused and depressed.

He was called an “idiot, crazy, duffer and lazy” and other hurtful names a child should

not hear from someone.

Then he met Ram Nikumbh, his temporary art teacher who noticed his

difficulties. Ram sees himself in Ishaan as he also suffers the same when he was a

child. He wanted to help the boy in his studies by staying persistent, showing his

sincerity by understanding the child’s problem in reading and writing as well as Ishaan’s

talent and creativity in arts. He talked and consulted the child’s parents for them to be

aware of Ishaan’s problems and disability and to give them the chance to fully

understand the struggle of having dyslexia. He helps Ishaan in many ways giving the

child a chance to prove his talent and capabilities.  With time, the young boy began to

improve little by little. The child is much happier than before finding comfort and security

through Ram who can understand him better and believe in him.

Somehow the movie broke my heart that some people specially in a place where

they should be guided and understand are the ones who failed to see and understand

them. It opened my eyes to see the wonders every child possesses. It gives hope and

insight that having disability is not a hindrance to be able to learn and definitely not a

hopeless case. We need to be observant and patient in helping them learn things, cope

with their surroundings etc. We need to understand them truly and acknowledge what

they can because at the end every child need are support, love and acceptance.
