Avoid Dangling and Misplaced Modifiers

Dangling and misplaced modifiers are the common errors are usually committed by writers. Modifiers are dangling if
they have nothing to modify logically. Modifiers are misplaced if intervening words obscure the relationships between or
among words they modify.

To avoid confusion in writing, a writer should ask himself this question: “ To whom or what does this group of words
refer?” A sentence may be revised so that its reference is clear. A noun or a pronoun may also be used as the subject of
the independent clause.

Check the sentences below:

Wrong:

A ball hit me in the head while waiting for the game to start. (dangling modifier)

Who is waiting to start?

Correct:

A ball hit me in the head while I was waiting for the game to start.

Wrong:

The old man was standing alone on the stage wearing an elegant barong Tagalog. (misplace modifier)

Correct:

The old man, wearing an elegant Barong Tagalog, was standing alone on the stage.

Directions: Rewrite the following sentences to eliminate dangling or misplaced modifiers.

1. Having missed the flight, the trip was postponed.

2. A group of students went to the beach that had been excused by their teacher.
