Did you enjoy? Yes Ma’am.
V. DISCUSSION

Our lesson for today is Subject-Verb

Agreement. Are you ready to listen? Yes Ma’am.

Agreement is when two or more things feel

the same way about something. They go
together.
For instance:
I think cupcakes are delicious.

Do you agree? Yes Ma’am

Do you think cupcakes are delicious? Yes Ma’am
Yes of course!
Another example:
I think big cupcakes are better than small
cupcakes.
Do you agree? Yes Ma’am
Of course!

With Subject –Verb Agreement, you need

the subject and the verb to agree.
Do you agree? Yes Ma’am

What is a Verb? -The verb is the action word of the sentence

Correct!

What is a Subject? -The subject is who or what does the subject.

Fantastic!

For example:
(Subject) (verb)
My teacher screams.

WHO/WHAT

Screams is the verb of the sentence, it is

the action words.

Who or What scream?

-My teacher

Teacher is the subject of the sentence.
Very good!

With the Subject –Verb Agreement, we

need the subject and the verb to agree.

How do we do that?

 A singular subject takes a singular

verb.
 A plural subject takes a plural verb.

What is a singular subject?

Or just one, Very good! -A singular subject means single.

For example: a book

a cat
a cupcake
a teacher
Who can give me another example?
Who else?
Very good! - a student
- a baby
Let’s move on , What is a plural subject?
Correct!
- A plural subject is more than one or
For example: Cats two or a thousands.
Cupcakes
Teachers
books
Who can give another example?

Students
Engineers
 To make a subject a Plural, you add Vendors
an “S/ES”
 To make Singular subject do not
add an S/ES”
Can you follow?

Let’s move on to VERB: -Yes Ma’am

 A singular verb has an “S/ES”

 A Plural verb does not have an
“S/ES”
*So the pattern is opposite.

I call this pattern the “SUBJECT-

VERB SEE SAW”
- A see saw is a toy that goes up
and down.

The subject-Verb See Saw looks like this:

1. Subject verb
2.
Subject +s
Verb +s

*If there is one subject the verb has the

“S”.
*If there is two or more subject the verb
does not.
For example: The girl sings.
The girls sing.

The boy reads.

The boys read.

Who can give me his/ her example?

Who else? -The bird sings

The birds sing.
-The duck swims.
Very good Class! The ducks swim.

It’s easy to remember right?

But wait! There are some exceptions,
Yes Ma’am
1. If you have two singular subjects
together sharing a verb, the verb
becomes plural.
Ex: My mom and dad walk.
My sister and brother play.

COLLEGE of TEACHER EDUCATION

Anyone who can give an example?
Excellent!
My aunt and uncle talk.
2. You can’t simply add “S” to make a
verb plural. Because they are
irregular verbs

Present Singular Present Plural

is are
has have
does do

For example:

The cat is smart. The cats are smart.

The cat has a long The cats have a
tail. long tail.
The cat does my The cats do my
homework. homework.
Now, give me your example.
Very good!
Take note of this irregular verbs. -The dog is clever.
-The dogs are clever.
3. Personal Pronoun
You are personal pronouns. “You”
may refer to singular or plural
subject but takes the plural verb “
are or were” every time.
Ex:
- You are the one assigned to
fetch the guest from the airport
later.

-You were able to show the group

that you are ready to go the job.

Now, give me your own example.

Very good Class!

- You are given five minutes to find the
Now, Let’s talk about Past Tense verbs correct answer.

The verb stays the same for singular and

plural subjects.

Example verb is “fly”

- The past tense of fly is flew.

The singular subject is- The
cupcake flew.
 The plural subject is – The
cupcakes flew.
Who can give his/her example?
-The kite disappear.
Very good! -The kite disappeared.

But remember one thing ,If there is a

helping verb it needs to agree with the
subject.
Here are Common helping verb:
Past Singular Past Plural
was were
has have

For example:
The cat was eating cupcakes.
The cats were eating cupcakes.

The cat has eaten all the cupcakes.

The cats have eaten all the cupcakes.

Who can give his/her example?

The dog was barking.
The dogs were barking.

Correct! The dog has eaten all the food.

*If there is a helping verb, it needs to agree The dogs have eaten allthe food.
with the subject.
