the ruler that produced the sound. As the ruler
vibrated, it moved the air around it and caused
the air to vibrate as well.

 When shouted, part of the sound waves you

created hit an opposing hard wall or surface. Part
of the sound was reflected by the wall, that is why
you heard the same sound again. The sound that is
reflected or returned sound is what we call an
echo.
 We cannot hear an echo if we are too close to a big
hard wall. The sound we made bounces back very
fast, and it mixes with the original sound. We
cannot tell which the original sound is and which
the echo is.
 Like light, sound can also be reflected. The
reflected sound is called an echo. And a series of
echo is called reverberation. An echo is produced
in closed areas like domes and churches. Echo can
be used to detect objects in a certain area. This
process is called echolocation.
 Now, let’s proceed to group 2. (Can You Hear The
Words I said?)
 Okay good job group 2! (The teacher will give (Group 2 present their task.)
points/score to group 2.) Let’s give a butterfly clap
to group 2.  (Students will give a butterfly clap to group 2.)
 When sound come in contact with different
materials like walls or carpets, they are either
reflected or absorbed. Some materials reflect
sound and cause echoes, hard surface like flat
concrete walls is good at reflecting sounds.
 Example: Concert halls are covered with carpet
and curtains because these materials absorb the
sound. So, the sound that will be heard by the
audience is the initial/ original sound instead of a

to group 3.
 Bats live just about everywhere. The hunt at night,
sleep in the hidden places like caves and old
buildings during the day and for the most part.,
feed on insects, pollen, flowers and fruit. Most
species of bats rely on echolocation to help them
find their food. This is why it is no problem at all for
them to be able to catch insects in complete
darkness.
 Echolocation is the transmission of sound waves to
locate objects.

 Now, let’s proceed to the last group. (Can You Find

the Animals Through Sounds?)
 Okay good job group 4! (The teacher will give
points/score to group 4.) Let’s give a Good Job

move and find their way through the sometimes-
murky depths of the deep ocean. They send out  (Students will give a Good Job clap to group 4.)
high-pitched sounds (i.e. clicks) which are bounced
off an object and returned to the whale. The whale
can then determine how far away the object is.
Whale is incredibly intelligent. Other than the
distance, they can also determine such things as
texture., shape and size of the object. This helps
them in deciding on where the prey and the
different objects around the ocean may be.
 The study of echoes is very important because our
navies use a form of echolocation called radar to
locate such things as other ships and the sea floor.

 Blind persons also use echolocation. This is called

human echolocation. They have the ability to detect
objects along their way by sensing echoes from
these objects. They tap their canes, stamp their
foot, snap their fingers, or make clicking sound
from their mouths.

 Discussion  Yes teacher, it is about preposition and

Characteristics of Sound
 The basic characteristics of sound are
pitch, frequency, volume and loudness.
 The pitch of a sound is the highness and
lowness of a tone. It is the response of the
ear to the frequency of sound. The higher
the frequency of the sound produced, the
higher is the pitch.
 The volume of a sound depends on how
loud or soft it is.
 The loudness of a sound wave depends on
the energy of the wave or how strong a
sound seems to us. The pitch of a sound
depends on the frequency, while the
loudness of a sound depends on the
energy of sound waves.
Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is
wrong.

1.Echo is the term used for the sound that is reflected to

its source.
2. Bats and dolphins used echolocation to locate their
food and determine their directions.
3. Only animals have the ability to use echolocation.
4. The sea floor is mapped using echolocation.
5. Some individuals have developed to use echolocation
and thus able to see even if they are blind.

4.Elaboration:
Answer the questions briefly.  Yes teacher.
 You saw some children playing with bats that they
captured from the trees. What must you tell them?

volume and loudness.  (The student will manipulate the laptop.)

 Me teacher?
How do you describe sound in a reflected form of echo?  (The student will manipulate the laptop.)
 Me teacher?
Answer:  (The student will manipulate the laptop.)

Reflection of sound occurs just like the reflection of

light. Echo is a distinct, reflected sound wave from
a surface. A reflected sound can be heard
separately from the original sound if the sound
source is closer to the receiver while the reflecting
hard surface is sufficiently far from receiver. Such
reflected sound is called an echo.

IV. EVALUATION
DIRECTION: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1.In which medium can sound wave travel faster?
A. solids
B. liquids
C. gases
D. all of these
2. What kind of light travels from one medium to another?
A. refraction
B. reflection and refraction
C. reflection
D. All of the above
3. When does the light is refracted?
A. When light travels in a straight line
B. When light is bounced.
C. When light cannot pass through an opaque object.
D. When light travels in a straight line.

V. ASSIGNMENT
