( EXPLAIN ) Students are listening
ABSTRACTION
- Class remember that, a phrasal verb is a verb plus
a preposition or adverb, which creates a meaning
from the original verb. Depending on the context,
phrasal verbs can have more than one meaning.

Examples:
I usually get up at 6 a.m.
In this sentence, the phrasal verb ‘get up’ means to
awaken from sleep.
o We are going to change rooms, everyone
get up.
In this sentence, the phrasal verb ‘get up’ means to
stand.

- In terms of word order, there are two main types

of phrasal verb: separable and inseparable.
- Separable
With separable phrasal verbs, the verb and the
preposition can be apart or together.
 They've called the meeting off.
 OR
They've called off the meeting.

However, separable phrasal verbs must be

separated when you use a personal pronoun.
The meeting? They've called it off.

 Non-separable
Some phrasal verbs cannot be separated.
Who looks after the baby when you're at work?

Even when there is a personal pronoun, the verb

and particle remain together.
Who looks after her when you're at work?

- Okay class, kindly read what’s written on the

visual aid.

Everyone: There are some points to help you use the

phrasal verbs correctly.
1. Can the phrasal verb be split?
There is no problem here if the verb is
Do you understand fully now class? intransitive (the verb doesn’t take an
Please give yourselves a massive 5 claps object) because there is no object.
Ready! We find it hard to get by on just one
salary. (There is no object to split get and
by.)
2. If the verb is transitive, we need to know
if the verb is separable or not. If it is not
separable, then the two parts need to keep
together.
The report looks into problems facing
workers in poor countries.
Not: The report looks problems facing
workers in poor countries into.
3. With separable phrasal verbs, the object
can come between the two parts.
We looked his name up on the internet.
We looked up his name on the internet.
4. If we use a pronoun with a separable
phrasal verb, then it must come between
the two parts.
I don’t believe you. You made it up.
Not: I don’t believe you. You made up it.
5. Some phrasal verbs have three (or more)
parts. These can’t be split.
The big companies get away with
- Thank you for that! murder.
I don’t know why people put up with it.
- Now, let’s take these examples:

Althea didn’t gave up in answering the difficult

math problem.

- What phrasal verb is used in the sentence? Everyone: gave up

They caught the robber who broke in the bank.

- What phrasal verb is used in the sentence? Everyone: broke in

yield a different meaning.

it. I will give you 2 minutes to do your task.
