Analogy

Background Information for Learners

Analogy is a comparison between two things that are usually thought to be different from each
other but have some similarities.
Suggestions for Constructing of Analogy
1. The relationship of the first pair of words is equal to the relationship of the second.
2. Destructors or incorrect responses must be plausible or closely related to the correct
answer to attract the examinees to the incorrect response. The process of obtaining the
correct answer is by logical elimination.
3. All options must be constructed to parallel language.
4. All options must be grammatically consistent.
5. Four or more options in each item must be included to minimize guessing. If using
three options, correction formula is applied.
6. Only homogeneous relationship must be included in each item.
Example: grass : green :: sky : blue
The ‘clue’ is to discover why and how the first pair go together.

Linear and Non-Linear Text

Background Information for Learners

Linear text
This is the most common type text that need to be read from beginning to end. It focuses on the
arrangement of the words, both grammatically and stylistically. Generally, texts printed on paper
are considered as linear texts. Novels, poems, short stories, letters, educational texts, all those
texts we read from the beginning to the end, are linear texts.
Non-Linear Text

The readers do not have to go through the text in a sequential manner in order to make sense of
the text. Most people consider texts with visuals or graphs along with it as examples for
nonlinear texts. Examples of non-linear text are charts or graphs.
Steps for a Simple Non-linear Interpretation
1. Give the title.
2. Write an overview or main idea.
3. Write the key features.
4. Conclude by giving the prediction or proposal regarding the nonlinear text.

4 Causes of Family Conflict

Family harmony provides a sense of belonging and a feeling of security unlike many
other types of relationships. When conflict arises, it threatens that security. Whether the
disharmony initiates from within the family unit or from external sources, individual family
members and the family as a whole can experience a range of negative emotions and
consequences. Unresolved conflict may irreparably damage a marriage and the entire family, if
family members do not seek help.
One major source of family conflict is within the area of finances-specifically, the lack of
enough money to pay bills, maintain the mortgage or rent, buy sufficient food and other
necessities and have any remaining money for recreation, job or career may contribute to conflict
within a family. If a parent’s job keeps him/her away from home most of the time, the spouse at
home with the children often feels neglected or overwhelmed. Conversely, if the parent becomes
unemployed, this causes its own form of stress and conflict, as finances dwindle and uncertainty
sets in about the future.
Another cause of family conflict is the inevitable rivalry that occurs between siblings.
Children typically seek their parents’ attention and approval, even if this requires tattling on, or
sometimes causing harm to a sibling. Whether a child expresses jealousy of a sibling, competes
with him/her or teases him/her non-stop, it is destined to cause conflict. Each child deserves an
equal amount of parental love and acceptance, yet sometimes a parent may favor one child over
another. This merely intensifies the conflict.
While mutual agreement on the subject of child discipline is crucial, the lack of
consensus opens up another potential area for family conflict. If one parent acts as the
“disciplinarian,” the other parent typically becomes the “consoler” to whom the children turn -
this often pits one parent against the other.
Jokes and movies abound regarding conflict with in-laws (especially mothers-in-law);
however, when you actually become involved in disagreements with your in-laws or extended
family, it is no laughing matter. While it is preferable to respect your elders-parents and
grandparents on both sides equally-this can prove to be challenging. If relatives routinely
interfere in your family’s decisions and lifestyle, conflict frequently results.

Background Information for Learners

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms.
 The term “MULTIMEDIA” was first used by BOB GOLDSTEIN in July 1996 to
promote opening of his light works.
 TAY VAUGHAN declared “Multimedia as combination of text, graphic art, sound,
animation, and video that is delivered by computer.
Characteristics of Multimedia
 Multimedia presentations can be viewed in person on stage, projected, transmitted, or
played locally with a media player.
 Broadcasts and recordings can be either analog or digital electronic media technology.
 The various formats of technological or digital multimedia may be intended to enhance
the users' experience.
 Online multimedia is increasingly becoming object-oriented and data-driven, enabling
applications with collaborative end-user innovation and personalization on multiple
forms of content over time.
Features of Multimedia
1. Text- is the most widely used and flexible means of presenting information on screen and
conveying ideas.
2. Audio- refers to sound. Multimedia can include files which contain sounds. Multimedia
presentations often have some audio tracks which makes it easier for people to
understand.
3. Pictures (images)- is a two-dimensional screen display, and as well as a three-
dimensional, such as a statue or hologram.
4. Video- is unedited material as it had been originally filmed by movie camera or recorded
by a video camera.
5. Animation- is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model
positions in order to create an illusion of movement. Animation adds visual impact to the
multimedia project.
6. Interactivity- can be termed as the dialog that occurs between an individual and a
computer program.
Advantages of Multimedia
1. Multimedia enhances the effect of text presentations.
2. Improves the quality of presentation and retains the attention of audience.
3. It can be used for educational as well as entertainment purpose.
4. It is quick and easier to operate for the instructor.
5. Multimedia presentations can be modified very easily.

The passage below is from the book Five Lectures on Blindness by Kate M. Foley. Read the
passage. Then answer the questions.

When mentally equipped, all blind students should be sent to college, and urged to fit
themselves as teachers. In every college and university blind men should occupy chairs in
history, English, economics, and mathematics. I know two blind men in this state well qualified
to teach any of these subjects, who are forced to accept inferior positions, because educators
generally fail to realize that blindness is no bar to mental attainment, and that the ability to teach
does not depend upon the ability to see with the eyes. This will be better understood when the
coeducation of blind and seeing children becomes more general—God speed the day! As music
teachers, concert players, leaders of orchestra, or masters of the violin and 'cello, the blind should
have an even chance of success, but their inability to read music at sight, or watch the director's
baton often deprives them of positions which their quick ear and well trained memory would
enable them to fill with profit to themselves and satisfaction to the public.
And so in all the professions. I know a man who, before he lost his eyesight, was
considered an eminent lawyer, but now his associates regard him pityingly, and his clients take
their business elsewhere. When the light went out of the eyes of this brilliant man, it did not take
his brain as well. He is fitted to be a consulting lawyer or court pleader, and could occupy a chair
in a college of law. Surely, there is something radically wrong when these conditions exist!
Surely the public needs to open its eyes, and polish its glasses in order to see more clearly that
there is a mental blindness, more pitiful, more far‐reaching in its consequences, than physical
blindness, however hard or uncomfortable the latter condition may be.
Someone facetiously suggested that I call this lecture "bringing light to the seeing," and,
in a sense, this is what I am trying to do. But the light is carried by a kindly hand, and the hand is
the index to a heart in which there is no bitterness, no malice, no distrust―a heart brimming over
with love, with hope, with confidence, and with a belief that the public will see the light, and,
seeing it, and reading my message in its beams, will pass it on to others, adding to it as it goes,
until it floods every corner of our vast state, and result in untold good for my people.

A Mysterious Manuscript
The Voynich manuscript is a handwritten book that is 246 pages long; it contains many
illustrations and about 170,000 unknown characters. It is of historical interest since the fact that
its characters are unknown means that no one has ever been able to read it. Carbon dating puts it
date of origin somewhere between 1404 and 1438. It was discovered in 1912 in an Italian Jesuit
College by a book collector named Wilfried Voynich, who claims that there was a letter tucked
inside the book dated 1666. This letter names previous owners of the book, giving it something
of a pedigree. Based on this letter, Voynich believed the book to have been written by the
English monk Roger Bacon (1214–1294), though that theory has now been discredited.
It remains unclear who wrote the book or why, but there have been many speculations.
An analysis of the book itself shows that the author wrote from left to right. The lettering is
inconspicuous, both in style and size. There are no punctuation marks, but this is not uncommon
with extremely old manuscripts. All of these things suggest that it is of European origin. Of note
is the fact that there are no corrections evident in the text, suggesting that the author got
everything perfect the first time, a rather uncommon occurrence with very long, handwritten
manuscripts. There are no chapters or subheadings. Almost all of the pages are illustrated, and
some of the pages are folded so that when opened the illustrations are several pages wide.
Though the book itself is not divided into chapters or even sections, the illustrations are of six
distinct subjects: botany, astronomical charts, nude female figures in tubs, circles and rosettes,
the apparent pharmaceutical use of plants, and an unillustrated section the text of which suggests
that it contains food recipes. It is impossible to attribute it to any particular school or thought or
religion. Compounding its curiosity, none of the 126 plant illustrations can be identified, though
certain conclusions could be drawn about the date of the manuscript based on these illustrations,
even before the carbon dating, based on the artistic style.  
Scientists have been unable to determine whether or not the text is an encrypted message,
or a text written in unknown letters. Analysis of letter frequencies suggest that the text is written
in a usual language, but with 15 – 25 different unknown letters. The average word length is four
or five letters, commensurate with European, Greek or Latin languages, but different in that the
Voynich manuscript doesn’t contain any two‐letter words, or any words with more than ten
characters. Even more strange, some words are repeated up to five times in a row, and the
frequency of recurring words is unusually low. This suggests that the manuscript is probably not
a simple code based on letter substitution, and it’s unclear whether other encryption methods are
at play.
For the time being the Voynich manuscript remains a mystery, the book that – to the best
of knowledge – no one has ever read.
