STAT 211 – MIDTERM EXAM

(BSAB 2A & B)

I. MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE: Write true if the statement is correct and false if it is wrong & write the
word/s that make the statement false.

________1. Thermodynamics is the science of energy.

________2. The first law of thermodynamics asserts that energy is a thermodynamic property1.
________3. The second law asserts that energy has quality as well as quantity, and actual processes occur in the
direction of decreasing quality of energy.
________4. The design of many engineering systems, such as solar hot water systems, involves
thermodynamics.
_______5. Vacuum pressures are pressure below atmospheric pressure.
_______6. The forms of energy not stored in a system can be viewed as energy interactions.
_______7. The difference between heat transfer and work is that an energy interaction is heat transfer if its
driving force is a temperature difference, otherwise it is work.
______8. Nuclear energy by fusion is released when two small nuclei combine into larger one.
______9. Kinetic and potential energies are the familiar forms of mechanical energy.
_____10. Mechanical energy is a useful concept for flows that do not involve significant heat transfer or energy
conversion.
_____11. Air is a mixture of several gases, but it is considered to be a pure substance.
_____12. Pure substance is a substance that has a fixed chemical composition throughout.
_____13. Compressed liquid is a substance that it is not about to vaporize.
_____14. As more heat is transferred, the temperature of the vapor starts to rise.
_____15. The pressure in a piston-cylinder device can be reduced by reducing the weight of the piston.
_____16. General analysis for a closed system undergoing a quasi-equilibrium constant-pressure process,
Q is to the system and W is from the system.
_____17. Cv is related to the changes in internal energy and Cp to the changes in enthalpy.
_____18. Solids and liquids are incompressible substances.
_____19. Incompressible substance is a substance whose specific volume (or density) is constant.
_____20. At low pressures, all real gases approach ideal-gas behavior, and therefore their specific heats depend
on temperature only.

II. PROBLEM SOLVING: Solve the following:

1. A 15-kg steel gas tank holds 300 L of liquid gasoline, having a density of 800 kg/m3. If the system is
decelerated with 6 m/s2 what is the needed force?
2. A piston motion moves a 50 lbm hammerhead vertically down 3 ft from rest to a velocity of 150 ft/s in a
stamping machine. What is the change in total energy of the hammerhead?
3. Determine the mass of the air in vacant room whose dimensions are 4m x 5m x 6m at 100 kPa and 250C.

NOTE: Write your answers in a clean sheet of yellow paper & show your solution in Part II (Problem
Solving). After 2 hours send your paper in our gc. Thank you…
