Function Description

Ethanol engine
DSI9E

General
As there are only few differences between the
DSC9 and the DSI9E, the 9 litre engine
Function Description also applies to the
DSI9E.
The differences between the engine models are:
• The valve seats are made of a new material,
Nimonic 80A.
• Because the engine is not equipped with an
exhaust brake, the valve springs are weaker
and the camshaft also differs.
• The air cooled charge air cooler has been
removed and replaced by a water cooled
charge air cooler that provides an even The new water cooled charge air cooler in

The 9 litre engine truck Work Description

applies to the DSI9E, except when:
• Checking the camshaft setting
• Removing and fitting the charge air cooler
on the induction pipe
• Removing and fitting the cylinder heads
• Changing engine.

The DSI9E has no plate with smoke data. The DSI9E is equipped with a turbo with
wastegate.

Work Description

Checking the camshaft setting

The DSI9E has new lifting height values.

Specifications

Lifting height
Intake valve 2.25 - 3.35 mm
Exhaust valve 2.30 - 3.30 mm

Checking
1 Set the crankshaft to TDC after the compression stroke on
cylinder number one.
2 Put two dial gauges against the valve spring thrust washers.
3 Adjust the rocker arms to remove the free play and then
adjust them further so that both valves are open 0.1 mm.
4 Zero both the dial gauges.
5 Turn the crankshaft one turn in the direction of rotation until
it is set to TDC again.
6 Read both the dial gauges and compare with the
specifications.

Work Description

Charge air cooler

The charge air cooler 3 is fitted directly on the induction pipe 1.
Prior to removal, the cooling water in the cooling system must be
drained. When fitting, tighten the charge air cooler retaining
bolts to 42 Nm.

Cylinder head
In order to remove the cylinder heads, the induction pipe 1 and
the water pipe 2 must be removed. Prior to this, the charge air
cooler 3 on the induction pipe must be removed.

Changing engine
Follow the instructions in the Work Description applying to the
9 litre engine bus.

! WARNING!

The ignition temperature is lower for ethanol fuel than

for diesel, which causes an increased risk of fire.
Therefore be careful when working on the engine.
