Types of DC Motors

DC Shunt Motor

Rsh= Shunt field resistance

Ra=Armature resistance
Eb= Back EMF
Ia=Armature current
Ish=Shunt field current
IL=Line current
V=Supply voltage

From the above circuit diagram we have the current relation as,
𝑽
IL=Ish+Ia where Ish=
𝑹𝒔𝒉

EMF equation, Eb=V-IaRa-BCD volts

DC Series Motor

Rse= Series field resistance

Ra=Armature resistance
Eb= Back EMF
Ia=Armature current
Ise=Series field current
IL=Line current
V=Supply voltage

From the above circuit diagram we have the current relation as,

Ia= Ise= IL

EMF equation, Eb=V-IaRa-IseRse-BCD volts

Eb=V-Ia(Ra+Rse)-BCD volts
Long shunt compound DC Motor
Rse= Series field resistance

Eb= Back EMF
Ia=Armature current
Ise=Series field current
Ish=Shunt field current
IL=Line current
V=Supply voltage

From the above circuit diagram we have the current relation as,
𝑽
IL=Ish+Ia & Ia=Ise where Ish=
𝑹𝒔𝒉

EMF equation, Eb=V-IaRa-IseRse-BCD volts

Eg=V-Ia(Ra+Rse)-BCD volts

Short shunt compound DC Motor

Rse= Series field resistance
Rsh= Shunt field resistance
Ra=Armature resistance
Eb= Back EMF

Note: Power developed in motor is Pa = EbIa Watts

Output power at the shaft is P0 = H.P X 735.5 Watts
Types of torques in DC motor
DC Motor
Shaft
Ta Tsh

𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒅
The torque developed in the armature is called as Armature torque or Total torque, Ta = 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 N-m
𝟐𝝅𝑵/𝟔𝟎
𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒑𝒖𝒕 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓
𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒓
The torque available at the shaft is called Shaft torque or Useful torque, Tsh = N-m
𝟐𝝅𝑵/𝟔𝟎

The torque developed in armature is always not equal to torque available at the shaft, this is because of losses.
𝑹𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒔
Therefore Loss torque, TL = Ta - Tsh or TL = N-m
