General Objectives of Investigation:

The scope of work is to complete a geotechnical investigation work for

“GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF PRIMARY PROCESSING
CENTER”. One no. of borehole was conducted at site. This report presents the results of the

site investigation and geotechnical recommendations related to the project.

Fieldwork and Laboratory Testing:

The boring of 1no of borehole was conducted during July of 2021. Field
testing was conducted and samples were collected during boring. Field standard
penetration tests (SPT) was conducted in the boreholes during drilling. Geotechnical
laboratory tests on collected soil samples were conducted at our laboratory in
Bhubaneswar.

Geotechnical Foundation Report:

A general description of the strata encountered during boring, the soil

properties, anticipated behavior of soils during construction and measured groundwater
levels are provided in this report. Geotechnical recommendations for shallow foundations
and other general geotechnical engineering parameters related to the proposed structure
are provided in this report. The foundation design parameters were derived from
calculations based on Indian standards and some standard geotechnical books.
1.0. INTRODUCTION
This report presents results of “GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR
GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF PRIMARY PROCESSING
CENTER”. This work was performed by CHIEF BUILD CONSULTANTS PVT LTD.

Conclusions and recommendations presented in this report are based on our current
knowledge of the proposed location, subsurface conditions encountered at exploration
locations, results of our laboratory testing. These conclusions and recommendations
should not be extrapolated to other areas without our prior review.

2.0. PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES

The purpose of the current geotechnical investigation was to explore and determine
the existing sub-strata conditions such as stratification, denseness or hardness of the strata,
position of ground water table at the location etc. and to evaluate approximate range of
safe bearing capacity for the proposed structure using empirical formulas provided in the
relevant IS codes. The goal of our investigation was to identify the key geotechnical issues
that could potentially impact the proposed project and to develop geotechnical
recommendations for design and construction of the project.
Our scope of services included the following tasks:
 Boring of One number of bore hole (BH-1) up to15.0m depth below the respective
existing ground level in order to know the sub surface stratification, conducting
necessary field tests and collection of sub-strata samples for laboratory testing.
 Testing of soil samples in the laboratory to determine its physical and engineering
properties and analyzing all field and laboratory data to evaluate bearing capacity of
the sub-strata for given foundation sizes.
 Preparation of this report containing our findings and recommendations including:
 Brief description of the proposed project;
 Description of the field exploration and laboratory testing programs;
 Discussion of the site surface and subsurface conditions;
 Preliminary geotechnical parameters for design of foundations, including the
allowable bearing capacity and estimated settlements with type and depth of
foundations for structural support.
3.0 Field Investigation Program

Field investigation work was in accordance with IS: 1892 -1979.

Field works include

 Boring in the sub-strata by Wash Boring/Rotary Drilling Method.

 Conducting SPT in soil as per IS: 2131 and collection of SPT samples.
 Collection of disturbed samples from bore holes.
4.0. Methodology of Investigation

4.1.1. Wash Boring

By using Wash Boring/rotary drilling rigs, the boreholes were progressed up to
required depth of boreholes. This method of boring is most widely used method of
advancing a boreholes. This method along with use of drilling mud to stabilize the side of
the borehole is likely to give the least disturbance to soils beneath the base of the borehole
and permit taking near to truly undisturbed samples. Diameter of boreholes was 150 mm.
Where caving of boreholes occurred, casings were used to keep the boreholes stable.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were conducted in the boreholes alternate to
UDS. By connecting a split spoon sampler to ‘A’ rods and driving it by 45 cm using a 63.5
kg hammer falling freely from a height of 75 cm. The tests were conducted in accordance
with IS: 2131-1981(Reaffirmed 1987).
Number of blows required for each 15 cm penetration of the split spoon sampler
was recorded. First 15 cm penetration is ignored. The cumulative no. of blows required to
penetrate the rest 30 cm of the 45 cm sampling interval is reported as the SPT value (N
value).
For collection of un-disturbed sample thin wall samplers have been used. In order
to reduce wall friction, suitable precautions such as oiling the surface shall be taken.
Bore logs showing field data of each borehole has been attached to this report.
4.1.2. Ground water
After completion of drilling and sampling ground water level was measured in the
borehole. In BH-1 the ground water level was found at 2.5m within the drilling depth
below the existing ground level. (Refer clause-4.1.4).

4.1.3. Logging and Sample collection.

During exploration for each borehole log of borings showing details about the
exploration were prepared.
Disturbed samples were collected from the split spoon sampler after conducting
SPT. The samples were preserved in transparent polythene bags with proper identification
mark.
In case of undisturbed samples, tubes were sealed with wax at both the ends. Then
samplers were wrapped with moist jute bags to prevent loss of moisture.

CALCULATION OF LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF PILE BH-1
Dia = 0.500 m
Length = 15.00 m
Vertical Load Carrying Capacity
As per IRC:78-2014 (Appendix-5) & IS : 2911 Part I / Sec 2 - 2010 (Appendix B)

Axial Capacity of Piles in Soil - Static Formula

Ultimate Load Carrying Capacity (Qu) of a Pile is given by :

Qu = Ru + Rf
Where, Ru = Ultimate Base Resistance
Rf = Ultimate Shaft Resistance

The Ultimate Base Resistance of Pile is as follows:

Ru = Ap Nc cp + Ap (0.5 Dγ Nγ + PDNq)
= X' + Y' where; X' = Ap Nc cp For Cohesive Soil
Y' = Ap (0.5 Dγ Nγ + PDNq) For Granular Soil
The Ultimate Side Resistance of Pile due to friction is as follows:
Rf = Σni=1 αi ci Asi+ Σ K PDi tan δi Asi

= X+Y where; X= Σni=1αi ci Asi For Cohesive Soil

Y= Σni=1 Ki PDi tan δi Asi For Granular Soil
2
Where; Ap = cross sectional area of pile tip, in m
Nc = bearing capacity factor, may be taken as " 9 "
cp = average cohesion at pile tip, in kN/m2
αi = adhesion factor for the ith layer depending on the consistency of soil
ci = average cohesion for the ith layer, in kN/m2
Ap = cross sectional area of pile tip, in m2
D = diameter of the pile shaft, in m
γ = effective unit weight of the soil at pile tip, in kN/m2
PD = effective overburden pressure at pile tip, in kN/m2
Σni=1 = summation for layers 1 to n in which pile is installed and which contribute to positive skin friction.
Nγ & Nq = bearing capacity factors depending upon the angle of internal friction "ϕ" at pile tip.
Ki = coefficient of Earth pressure applicable for the ith layer.
PDi = effective overburden pressure for the " ith " layer, in kN/m2
d = angle of wall friction between pile and soil, in degrees (may be taken equal to f).
Asi = surface area of pile shaft in the ith layer, in m2

ϕ = 34.00 35 33.30 48.03
Nq = 30.32
Nγ = 42.90
B.Capacity = 46.76 Hence, B Capacity = 52.15
Qsafe = 8.691 t
Total Qsafe = 68.3 + 8.7

say 76.00 t
Hence, the vertical Load carrying capacity of the pile is taken as 76 ton in the design
Horizontal Load Carrying Capacity
As per IS : 2911 Part I / Sec 2 - 1979 (Appendix C)

1. Pile Diameter = 0.500 m

2. Concrete design mix strength = 25 Mpa (Assumed)
3. Modulus of elasticity of Concrete ( Ec ) = 5000 x sqrt ( 25 )
= 250000.0 kg / cm2
4. Moment of Inertia ( I ) = π d4 / 64
= 0.00307 m4
= 306796.2 cm4
5. Embeded Length of Pile ( Le ) = 15.00 m > 4T
7.50 m
The depth of fixity is determined from the codal provisions and the graph given there.

From Table we get nh = 0.331 kg/cm3

T = 187.48 cm
= 1.87 m

Free Length of pile ( L1 ) = Scour Level- Pile top level (length of pile above scour level)
L1 = 0.000 m

Hence; L1 / T = 0 / 1.875
= 0.00
Therefore from the graph we read the corresponding value of " Lf / T ".

Lf / T = 2.20 for Fixed head piles

Hence;
Equivalent Cantilever Length Lf = 2.2 x 1.875
= 4.12 m
The pile head deflection is calculated by " Y "

Free Head Piles

Considering an allowable deflection of 0.25 cm (say)

Lateral Load at Pile top; Q = 12 EI Y

( L1 + L f ) 3

= 3279.38 kg
= 3.28 t

Hence, the horizontal Load carrying capacity of the pile is taken as 3.28 ton for the design

ESTIMATION OF UP-LIFT CAPACITY

In the worst case of submergance the first part of the expression representing end bearing resistance is neglected,and in
In the instant case therefore the ultimate uplift capacity of pile (Q tu) shall be given by
Qtu = 2/3 rd of frictional resistance + Wp
where W p = Submerged weight of pile = (3.141/4)×D2×L×(2.5-1) gm
Frictional resistance = 170.73 T
W p = 4.418 T
so Qtu = 118.238 T

safe Up Lift capacity with a factor of safety of 3 = Qtu/3
