1. INTRODUCTION
This specification sets technical requirements for design, materials, fabrication, erection, inspection,
and testing of low-pressure ammonia storage tanks for Zanjan Agricultural & Fertilizer Industries
Company (ZAFIC).

3. GENERAL
1) Tanks shall comply with API standard 620. This specification is supplement to that code. Other
references mentioned here or elsewhere shall also be used when required. The codes
referenced inside each reference code can also be applicable.
2) Materials of construction shall be compatible with ammonia service. No copper, zinc, brass, or
galvanized material shall be used.
3) During site erection the tank shall be protected against wind pressure using temporary cables.
The necessary provisions shall be brought in erection procedure. Wind girders shall be
installed as soon as possible.
4) Cylindrical shell, intermediate stiffeners, and end stiffeners shall be checked for external loads
according to the following references:
1- API 650, annex V
2- DIN 18800 part 4

5) Stiffening rings and wind girders shall not have rat holes except where mandated by the code.
When a rat hole is used, ring-to-shell weld shall terminate 50mm short of rat hole center as per
code and shall not pass through the hole. In calculating the section modulus, items Q.3.5.5
and R.3.5.5 of API620, requirements of UG-29 in ASME-VIII on effect of the holes on the
section modulus shall preferably be met. Stiffening rings of outer shell shall be located inside.
Stiffening rings of inner shell shall be located outside.
6) A stiffening ring shall be considered at top of inner shell to maintain roundness of shell and
protect against earthquake.
7) Cone type roof shall not be used.
8) Rafter spacing shall be limited to that specified in API-650 on cone roofs unless analysis or
rule requires smaller spacing or allows greater spacing.
9) The tank shall have suspended deck. Deck plate and insulation are to extend to outer shell.
Suspended deck shall have internal vertical bracing to resist seismic forces and prevent
movement during earthquake. Suspended deck plates shall have continuous fillet weld on
upper side and intermittent fillet weld on lower side. Vent holes shall not be located in the
annular area of deck; they shall be located near the center. Adequate gap shall be considered
between top edge of inner shall and underside of deck plate to ensure that annular space shall
not be pressurized. Deck hanger material shall be suitable for low temperature.
10) Fixed roof structure materials shall be suitable for anticipated low temperature.
01 11) Sizing of inner tank shall comply with section 6.3 of API625.

4. DESIGN CALCULATIONS
Vendor shall prepare all necessary calculations. The procedure with input data and output results
shall be sent to purchaser for review. As minimum, code calculations and calculation for the following
items shall be prepared.
1) Shell courses - shall be checked for all applicable loads and load combinations. Both tensile
stresses and compressive stresses shall be considered. Hydrotest of tank in corroded
condition shall be considered.
In addition to load combinations specified in API620, the following cases should be
01 checked.

- DL + Pl + Pv + 0.4(Lr or S)
- DL + Pl + 0.4Pv + (Lr or S)

2) Anchorage (strength of all parts and welds, stress in the shell at the attachment point)
3) Wind girders and stiffening rings
4) Thickness and width of annular bottom plate (in appendices L, Q, R). Selection of liquid density
between actual value and the minimum value specified in the code shall be such that higher
thickness and width results.
5) Nozzles including the following checks as minimum.
1- Strength of welds
2- Reinforcement of wall plate
3- Thickness of cover plate, bolting flange, bolting, gasket, and nozzle neck
4- External load on nozzle

6) Expansion bellows as per ASME VIII


7) Roof supporting structure or stiffener (shall be checked using SAP2000 software)
8) Suspended deck including plates, beams, hangers, and connections considering the following
and other applicable loads/load combinations.
1- Dead weight + insulation weight + weight of workers and objects. An appropriate
concentrated weight shall be considered in design of any of the above specified parts, but
this shall not be less than 230kg.
2- Dead weight + insulation weight + a uniform load for abnormal conditions across the deck
of 50kg/m2 or other appropriate value.
3- Dead weight + Seismic load
9) The required extent of radiography for each vertical & horizontal weld seam of inner and outer
shell plate, using the stress/thickness/curvature criteria of code
10) Foundation loading
11) Thermal and strength calculations of insulation pointed out in the section ‘insulation’.
12) Tank sizing
5. WALKWAY, LADDER, PLATFORM
1) Access to the roof shall be by a stair tower which is supported by ground and not connected to
the tank.
2) Additionally an emergency exit ladder shall be considered. This shall be connected to the tank
from top to the bottom.
3) Access from fixed roof to suspended deck and from suspended deck to bottom of inner tank
shall be provided.
4) All walkways, stairways, and platforms shall be furnished with handrail and two knee-rails on
open or exposed sides.
5) Platforms and walkways shall have toeboard on exposed side. For safety reasons there shall
be no gap between toe rail and top of platform or walkway.
6) Nose of steps shall be non-slip type.
7) Handrail shall extend all around periphery of fixed roof.
8) All members connected to the tank shall be seal welded.
9) All parts shall be of steel.
10) Flooring shall be serrated steel grating or perforated steel plate with turned up edges.
11) Ladder, platform, stair and their connection to the tank shall be designed for the following live
loads.
Access platform and walkway: 250 kg/m2 uniform or 450 kg concentrated
Operating / maintenance platform: 500 kg/m2 uniform or, 450 kg concentrated
Stairs: 250 kg/m2 uniform or, 450 kg concentrated
Ladder: 30 kg/m, minimum 160 kg for each vertical section
12) Handrail and guardrail assemblies shall be designed in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR part
1910. The assemblies and their support shall be designed to resist a simultaneous vertical
and horizontal load of 75kg/m applied to top rail. The horizontal load is to be applied
perpendicular to the plane of handrail or guardrail. Also, all handrail and guardrail systems and

their support must be capable of withstanding a single concentrated load of 90kg applied in
any direction at any point along the top. This load need not be combined with previously
specified load of 75kg/m. Intermediate rails shall be designed to withstand a horizontally
applied normal load of 37kg/m.
13) Legs and supports of roof platforms, piping, or other items shall be placed directly above roof
supporting structure/stiffener.
14) Arrangement of roof walkway and platform shall be determined by vendor.
6. OTHER ACCESSORIES
1) Each tank shall be equipped with one additional pressure vent device and one additional
vacuum vent device of the capacity equal to the largest capacity device installed.
2) Nozzles connecting to inner tank shell which penetrate outer shell shall be fitted with metallic
expansion bellows. Expansion bellows shall be internally insulated. Shelter shall be
considered for expansion bellows to protect from objects falling from above.
3) Davit pipes shall be provided for dismantling and dropping of safety valves, relief valves,
holding of manhole covers etc.
4) Piping for tank purging shall be located on bottom of inner tank and on bottom of annular area.
7. INSULATION
1) Insulation system shall comply with the requirements of following codes in all respects.

a) Section 9 of API625, 1st edition


b) EN14620-4: 2006
2) The insulation system shall include all applicable parts of the tank requiring insulation such as
bottom, deck, shell, internal cold piping in the roof space, cold nozzles of fixed roof, manhole and
nozzles of shell, manhole, openings and penetrations of deck.
3) Shell insulation to be on outside surface of outer shell. It shall be in-situ PUF material and shall
be fire retardant grade/type and self-extinguishing. The cover shall be a metallic corrugated
material suitable for site conditions and at the lowest point shall extend to vertical peripheral edge
of foundation slab (see figure 5.5 of API650). The SS band around the cover shall be fitted with
Stainless steel springs to keep the band tight after the tank thermally contracts. Vendor shall
approve compatibility of paint material on shell plate under insulation.
4) Suspended deck is to be insulated using blanket type material. Deck plate and insulation are to
extend to outer shell. In determining the required thickness of insulation the long term settlement
of insulation shall be considered and shown in calculation report.
5) Bottom insulation shall be located under the bottom plate of outer tank. Insulation cover must be
sealed to protect the insulation from moisture ingress. Also the surface of concrete foundation
slab shall be protected from moisture. Vendor shall supply the moisture protection material and
provide application instructions.
6) Bottom insulation should be adequate to protect foundation from objectionable low temperatures.
Calculation for temperature of foundation shall be prepared and sent to purchaser for comment.
7) The material for bottom insulation shall be cellular foam glass block complying with ASTM C552.
Under inner shell plates, and under outer shell plates, a high load bearing support ring shall be
considered. Both rings shall have the required mechanical strength (local compression directly
under tank shell plate, bending, shear). Additionally the outer ring shall have the required thermal
insulation properties. Mechanical strength of bottom insulation for all applicable loadings
including hydrotesting, operation, earthquake, wind, tank shrinkage, should be verified and
calculation to be provided. For purchaser to check sliding resistance of tank against wind and

earthquake, vendor shall provide friction factors for all contact areas including tank-to-insulation,
and insulation-to-insulation under bottom plate and under shell for inner tank and outer tank.
Number of insulation layers to be the lowest practical and the thickness of each layer to be
selected as high as possible.
8) Supporting blocks under shell plate shall have a thickness tolerance of 1mm.
9) Design of insulation includes general design and detail design. Also the design includes thermal
design and strength design.
10) Insulation system shall be designed by vendor to limit boil off of the tank to the value specified
by the purchaser. Heat leak through open vents and thermal bridges, for example roof hangers,
shall be considered. Heat leak per surface area of bottom not to be more than that of shell
preferably. Similarly heat leak per surface area of shell not to be more than that of roof.
11) Site conditions to be considered in determination of boil-off rate include:
- Highest one-day mean ambient temperature
- No wind
- Solar radiation effects
12) A separate calculation will be performed to obtain lowest temperatures of tank and foundation.
This will be in the coldest environmental conditions in winter. The insulation system shall prevent
condensation and ice formation.
13) Properties of insulation materials, such as thermal conductivity, shall be determined in the actual
conditions of tank such as actual gas or vapor, temperature, pressure, etc.
14) In design and calculation of insulation system the long term characteristics of insulation, such as
thermal conductivity and settlement, shall be considered.
15) Vendor shall prepare MTO (material take off) for all items whether in his scope or not. Additional
amount shall be included to cover loss, damage, repair and test at site.
16) Vendor shall provide data sheet for all items of supply. Data sheet shall provide all technical
information such as materials of construction, relevant properties, dimensions, tolerances,
applicable standards, required tests, and manufacturer’s name.
17) For shell foam insulation, additional mechanical data, such as the following, shall be provided:
Poisson’s ratio, coefficient of thermal contraction down to service temperature, tensile &
compressive strength, modulus of elasticity.
18) Vendor shall prepare detailed drawings for all parts of insulation. Drawings shall have list of
materials including mark number, dimensions, quantities, material specifications, etc.
19) Vendor shall provide fully detailed instructions for application/installation of insulation especially
for items that are to be constructed at site such as in-situ PUF. The instruction shall include
adequate information on any required tool, equipment, etc. The instructions shall include pictorial
illustrations for detail and sequence of work. Repair procedure also shall be provided.
20) Vendor shall prepare and send the following documents to the purchaser.
1- Technical data sheets
2- Safety data sheet for hazardous materials
3- Calculations
4- Detail drawings including list of materials
5- Material take-off
6- Installation/application procedure

21) Technical documents attached to the offer will not be considered as approved. After placement
of order vendor shall submit documents for purchaser’s review and comment; any necessary
corrective action shall be taken by vendor without further charge to the purchaser.
22) All materials shall comply with the material specification. This shall be proven by testing and
certified.
23) Delivery of insulation material shall be coordinated with purchaser in advance to suit tank
construction schedule.
8. HYDROTEST
1) Vendor shall prepare detailed procedure of testing the tank. The procedure shall be complete
and shall be prepared for the specific conditions of the subject tank. Outer tank shall not be
hydrotested.
2) Settlement of tank shall be checked. The distance between measurement points shall be equal
to each other and shall be 9.15m maximum. Different modes and acceptance criteria of
settlement shall be as per API 620 and API 625 as minimum. During the test, settlement readings
shall be taken regularly and reported to the purchaser.
9. INSPECTION
1) Vendor shall prepare complete and detailed inspection instructions covering all parts of the tank.
2) Vendor shall prepare an inspection plan. For each part of the tank sufficient information such as
the following shall be provided.
- When the inspection is to be performed
- Locations to be inspected
- Type and extent the of required examination
3) Vendor shall prepare detailed procedure for the following and other types of examination.
- Radiography examination
- Magnetic particle examination
- Liquid penetrant examination
- Ultrasonic examination
- Vacuum box examination
- Visual examination
4) Each examination procedure shall have complete information for execution including the
following as minimum.
- The required environmental conditions
- The required conditions of the part to be examined
- The required tools and materials
- Detailed procedure of examination
- Acceptance criteria
- Defect removal
- Repair procedure

10. DOCUMENTATION
1) Vendor shall provide documents as per RFD form and vendor document handling procedure.
2) Revised matter on any vendor document shall be marked with revision mark for easy recognition.
3) Documents, such as procedures, shall have adequate details and shall be prepared specifically
for this project. General purpose documents are not acceptable.
4) Each drawing shall have a part list including the following information as minimum: part number,
quantity, dimensions, piece net weight, material designation, applicable standard, and total net
weight for that drawing.
5) Units used on drawings, calculation, and other documents shall be as follows.
- Dimensions: millimeter
- Size of Pipe, flange, and fittings: inches.
- Flange rating: lb
- Weights: kg
- Other units: SI system
6) The following documents, as minimum, shall be provided for review.
- Document index (to be revised and issued periodically)
