Chapter-3 Large Numbers
Comparing & ordering Large Numbers:
In 4th standard we have seen comparison & ordering of 5 digit numbers. Let’s recall …
 Compare Following & use appropriate sign > ,< or =
a) 3 ▭ 8 , as 8 is greater than 3 , we write 3 < 8
b) 8 ▭ 82 , 8 is 1 digit number & 82 is two digit number , therefore we write 8 < 82
(The number having fever digits is smaller)
c) 75863 ▭ 75653 , For comparing we follow these steps
Step 1: Write the numbers in the place value chart.
Step 2:Check ,if the number of digits in given numbers are same.
If, yes we go for Step 3, otherwise the number having fever digits is smaller.
Step 3: Start from comparing the digits in largest place (in place value chart).
If the digits in largest place are same we proceed to compare digits in next
smaller place .We continue this till we get different digits in same place .The number
with the smallest digit in the same place of the given numbers is the smaller number.
For given example,
TC C TL L TTh Th H T O
7 5 8 6 3
7 5 6 5 3

1. As 7=7 ,go for next smaller place 3. As 8 > 6

2. As 7=7 ,go for next smaller place 75863 > 75653

Ordering Numbers : Arranging the numbers in ascending or descending order is known as

Ordering Number.
Ascending Order: Arranging the numbers from the smallest to biggest.
Descending Order: Arranging the numbers from the biggest to smallest.

 Arrange following numbers in ascending & descending orders.

58348975 ,14327818 ,57124721 , 57387542
Ans: Putting all numbers in place value chart. We follow all steps as that used for
comparison.
C TL L TTh Th H T O
5 8 3 4 8 9 7 5
1 4 3 2 7 8 1 8
5 7 1 2 4 7 2 1
5 7 3 8 7 5 4 2
In the Crore place 5 >1. Therefore 14327818 is the smallest number. We mark this as I
There are three numbers with 5 in the crores place .So, comparing ten lakh place of these
numbers. We have 8 > 7. Therefore 58348975 is the greatest of all. We mark this as
Comparing Lakhs place of remaining two numbers, we have 1 < 3 .Therefore
57124721 < 57387542 . Marking 57124721 as & 57387542 as
Thus ,14327818 < 57124721 < 57387542 < 58348975
Ascending order : 14327818 , 57124721 , 57387542 , 58348975
Descending order : 58348975, 57387542, 57124721 , 14327818

Class Work: ( To be solve in CW notebook)

Q1. Fill in the blanks with > , < or =

a) 4,34,12,456 4,34,21,456

b) 2,31,98,896 6,87,98,541

c) 7,97,43,111 6,12,41,845

d) 1,67,91,941 1,76,19,149

Ans: Putting numbers in place value chart

a)

Thus ,

4,34,12,456 < 4,34,21,456

b) Thus,

2,31,98,896 < 6,87,98,541

( Students should solve remaining two problems by their own)

Q 2. Arrange the numbers in ascending & descending orders.

a)85714781, 57294769, 18372657

Ans : Putting the numbers in place value chart

As in crore place 8 > 5 > 1

Therefore,

85714781 > 57294769 > 18372657

Ascending order: 18372657 , 57294769 , 85714781
Descending order: 85714781 , 57294769, 18372657

b) 10101010, 11010101, 10010101

Putting numbers in place value chart.

Therefore ,

Ascending order:10010101,10101010,11010101

Descending order:11010101,10101010,10010101

( Students should solve remaining two problems by their own)

c)17485729, 91845726, 75638462

d) 38593010, 75639205, 75927592
