1.0 SCOPE

This Specification covers the minimum requirements for the design, manufacturing,
testing and supply of Electric Low Voltage Power Cables, Control Cables and Cable
Glands.

2.0 CODES, REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS

Vendor shall meet or exceed the requirements of the latest edition of the following
codes, regulations and standards, except as superseded herein. In cases where more
than one code, regulation or standard apply to the same condition, the most stringent
shall be followed. In the event of a conflict between this specification and other
specifications or correspondence, the OWNER shall be consulted and a ruling, in writing,
shall be obtained before any work is started.

• IEC 60092 Cables (construction, testing and installation)

• IEC 60228 Conductors of insulated cables

• IEC 60287 Calculation of the continuous current rating of cables

• IEC 60331 Fire resisting characteristics of electric cables

• IEC 60332 Tests on electric cables under fire conditions

• IEC 60502 Extruded solid dielectric insulated power cables for rated
voltage from 1kV up to 30kV

• IEC 60811 Common test method for insulating and sheathing materials of
electric and power cables

• IEC 60885 Electrical test methods for electric cables

• IEC 60754 Tests on gases evolved during combustion of electric cables

• IEC 61034 Measurement of smoke density of cables under defined

conditions.

Some requirements in this specification may be modified by specific requirements in the

Purchase Specification. In case of conflict, the specific requirements supersede this
specification.

Any deviation from this specification must be approved, in writing, by OWNER. Such
written approval must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work which would
constitute such a deviation.

3.0 ENVIRONMENTAL DATA

For details of environmental data, please refer to the Data Sheet for LV Cables and
Cable Glands.

4.0 GENERAL

All cables shall generally be IEC approved and bear an IEC approved label for the
particular application.

5.0 CONSTRUCTION

The cable shall be of the following specifications:

Conductor :

Annealed, stranded high conductivity copper, preferably circular in shape with maximum
conductor temperature limited to 900C

Insulation : XLPE, 600/1000V Grade, for LV power and control

Core identification:

Two Cores : Red & Black

Three Cores : Red, Yellow and Blue.
Four Cores : Red, Yellow, Blue and Black
Control Cores : Black coded numbers in white

Conductor lay : Cores laid up with fillers

Inner sheath : Plastic tape wrapping & PVC Bedding

Bedding : Extruded PVC.

Armouring : Galvanized steel wire (lay in a direction opposite to conductor)

and aluminum wire for single core only.

Outer sheath : Extruded, moisture-proof, black coloured, polyethylene, grade ST7

with additive to make it withstand solvents & aliphatic
hydrocarbon, resistant to corrosion due to hydrocarbon, organic
solvent etc. Also this shall be flame retardant.
Embossing : Embossing shall be provided on the outer sheath to depict the
voltage rating, manufacture’s name, year of manufacture, no. of
cores and size and the Client name.

Note:

For direct buried cables, steel wire armouring is required.

All cables shall confirm to the data sheet for electric low voltage cables. All missing
details and parameters in the data sheet shall be filled by the vendor. The cables shall
be supplied and installed in such a way that:

1) Maximum possible length is to be provided per drum.

2) No less than four pieces of tight fitting PVC/Rubber end caps per drum length shall
be provided with each drum for use during the cable cutting / installation.

3) The cable drum shall:

a) Be of wood or steel provided with wooden batons to protect the cable from
damage.
b) Have either ends of the cable wound on it properly plumbed / sealed with water
proof sealing caps, immediately after the factory tests.
c) Be arranged to take round spindle.
d) Have clear markings on outside faces of both the flanges as follows:
• Ultimate user’s name.
• Project name.
• Purchase order number.
• Year of manufacture.
• Voltage rating.
• Type of cable.
• Number of cores and size.
• Drum length.
• Drum number.
• Drum weight.
• Direction of rotation.

6.0 CABLE GLANDS

Cable glands shall be manufactured and tested to the requirements of BS or IEC

standards. All cable glands shall be nickel-plated brass, double compression type with
all necessary accessories as indicated in the data sheets.

7.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING

Inspection and testing of the material shall meet the requirements as per the Standards
listed under Item 2.0 of this specification.
