• The name Assam originates later. It came into use after the
Ahoms conquered Assam.
• It has also been heard that the name "Assam" is derived from
the word "Assam" which means uneven.
• The Mughals attempted to attack here but did not succeed, but
Burma finally invaded Assam at the end of the 18th century.
• Continually held its authority until it was handed over to the East
India Company at the end of the First Burma War in 1826. The
British ruled it till 1947 with the same name.
• Dispur is the capital of Assam and the largest city in the suburb
Guwahati region.

मोटे तौर पर, असम के िनवािसयों को तीन ेिणयों म िवभािजत िकया जा सकता है ,
अथात जनजातीय जनसं ा, गैर जनजातीय जनसं ा और अनुसूिचत जाितयाँ ।-
जनजातीय लोगों म िविभ जातीय(बोडो) सां ृ ितक समूहों जैसे कछारी-, िम र,
दे ओरी, रभा, नागा, गारो, ख़ासी आिद शािमल ह।
गैरजनजातीय समूहों म अहोम-, काय थ, किलता, मोरन, मु क, चुिटया आिद
शािमल ह।
अनुसूिचत जाितयों म बसफोर, बिनया, धोबी, हीरा, कैबाता और नामसू आिद
शािमल ह।
िव थािपत हो कर यहाँ बसने वालों म अिधकतर बंगाल, बां ादे श, िबहार, उ र
दे श,नेपाल और राज थान से थे।
एक अ समूह “बगिनया” के नाम से जाना जाता था िज ि िटश रोजगार अविध
के दौरान ि िटश चाय उ ादकों ारा बंगाल, िबहार, ओिडशा, और म दे श से
लाया गया था।
असम म शु आत म थािपत होने वाले कुछ लोगों म आयन तथा िवड़ समूह के
लोग थे।
यहाँ के मूल िनवािसयों को िविभ जनजातीय समूहों के िकरत के प म जाना जाता
था जैसा िक महाभारत म उ ेख िकया गया है ।
The people
• Broadly, the residents of Assam can be divided into three
categories, namely tribal population, non-tribal population
and scheduled castes.
• Tribal people include various ethno-cultural groups such as
Kachari (Bodo), Miri, Deori, Rabha, Naga, Garo, Khasi etc.
• Non-tribal groups include Ahom, Kayastha, Kalita, Moran,
Muttak, Chutia etc.
• Scheduled Castes include Basfor, Baniya, Dhobi, Heera,
Kaibarta and Namasudra etc.
Most of the settlers here after being displaced were from
Bengal, Bangladesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal and
Rajasthan.
• Another group known as "Bagnia" were brought from
Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh by British tea
producers during the British employment period.
• Some of the early people in Assam were Aryan and
Dravidian group.
The original inhabitants of this place were known as Kirats of
various tribal groups as mentioned in the Mahabharata.
लोक नृ
Folk dance
• Bihu dance is the most popular folk dance of Assam and as its very
name suggests, belongs to the Bihu festival, which is celebrated with
pomp in the state. The festival is mainly a celebration of various
stages of farming
• Jhoomar dance, a distinctive folk dance performed by the tea
community in the state, locally known as Baganar Jumur Nach 'or
Jumur dance of tea garden.
• Devouthani dance is a folk dance of the Indian state of Assam. This
is in the form of a solo or group performance.
• The Bhortal dance of Barpeta is one of the popular traditional
dances of Assam, which was developed by a famous Sriti artist
Narhari Burha Babkat.
• Bagurumba is a folk dance of the indigenous Bodo tribe in Assam
and Northeast India. It is a traditional dance traditionally intertwined
from one generation to another.
• Khamba Lim, this is a typical folk dance of Assam performed by two
groups of men and women, standing in two rows.
• Dhulia and Bharwari, these are dances with bhauas ranging from
dramatic dance to vigorous dance to the accompaniment of drums
and cymbals. These are said to be similar to the miracle plays of
Europe which were performed in the Middle Ages.

ोहार :
असम म मनाए जाने वाले मुख ोहार ह िब -भोगली अथवा माघ
िब (जनवरी),रोंगाली अथवा बोहग िब (अ ैल) और कोंगाली अथवा कित
िब (मई) िज पूरे असम म सभी जाित, पंथ तथा धम के लोगों ारा मनाया जाता
है।
अ ोहार ह बैशागु (अ ैल के म म बोडो कछारी लोगों ारा मनाया जाता है ),
आली-आई-िलगां ग (िमिशं ग जनजाित का ोहार, फरवरी-माच),
बाइखो (रभा जनजाित, बसंत के मौसम म),
रोंगकेर (काब लोगों का मह पूण ोहार, अ ै ल)
रिजनी गबरा और हरनी गबरा (िदमासा जनजाित),
बोहािगयो िबशु (दे वरी लोगों का बसंत ऋतु का ोहार),
अंबुबाशी मेला (कामा ा मंिदर का सवािधक मह पूण ोहार ित वष जू न के
म म मनाया जाता है। यह सरलताओं की था है िजसे “तांि क” रीितयों से मनाया
जाता है )
जोनिबल मेला (गुवाहाटी के पास जागीरोड के जोनिबल म ित वष सिदयों के दौरान
आयोिजत िकया जाने वाला शानदार मेला) आिद।
य िप असम के लोग ज ा मी (अग ),दु गा पूजा (अ ूबर),िदवाली, ईद,
मुहरम,मे-दाम-मे-िफ, वै व सं तों ीमंत संकरदे व और ी माधवदे व की जयंती
और बरसी भी मनाते ह।
Festival :
• Zonebill Fair (a splendid fair held every year during the winter in the
Zonebill of Jagirod near Guwahati) etc.
भाषा – Language
साथ ही यहाँ दू सरी भारतीय भाषाओ का भी उपयोग िकया जाता है जैसे पंजाबी,
मारवाड़ी, भोजपुरी और गुजराती इ ािद।
असामी भाषा के बाद यहाँ सवािधक अं ेजी भाषा का उपयोग िकया जाता है ।
Language
• Here other Indian languages are also used such as Punjabi, Marwari,
Bhojpuri and Gujarati Gyandeep.
भौगोिलक थित
मै दानी इलाक़ों एवं नदी घािटयों वाले असम को तीन मुख भौितक े ों म िवभािजत
िकया गया है -
1. उ र म पु नदी घाटी
2. दि ण म बरक नदी घाटी एवं काब तथा आलंग िज़लों के पवतीय े
3. इन दोनों घािटयों के म थत उ री कछार की पहािड़याँ
पु नदी घाटी असम का मुख भौितक े है ।
यह नदी असम के पूव र िसरे पर सािदया के पास वेश करती है ,
यह पि म म पूरे असम म लगभग 724 िकमी. लंबे माग म वािहत होकर दि ण
की ओर मुड़कर बां ादे श के मै दानी इलाक़ों म चली जाती है ।
पु नदी घाटी, छोटी एकल पहािड़यों और मै दानी इलाक़ों म अचानक उठते
िशखरों, िजनकी चौड़ाई 80 िकमी. से ादा नहीं है , से भरी ई है ।
पि म िदशा को छोड़कर बाक़ी सभी िदशाओं म यह पव ों से िघरी ई है ।
पड़ोस की पहािड़यों से िनकली कई जलधाराओं एवं उपनिदयों का जल इसम
समािहत होता है।
बरक नदी घाटी दि ण-पू व िदशा म िव ृत िन भू िम के े की संरचना करती है ,
जो कृिष के िलए मह पू ण है एवं इससे अपे ाकृत सघन बसी जनसं ा को मदद
िमलती है, हालांिक इस घाटी का एक छोटा सा ही िह ा रा के सीमा े म है
geographical situation
• Assam with plains and river valleys is divided into three major
physical regions-
• Assam State Zoo - This is the largest zoo in the state. The zoo
was established during 1957 and opened to the public during
1958. Animals like one-horned rhinos, tigers, clouded leopards,
golden langurs and Himalayan black bears are also found here.

• Guwahati (gateway to Assam and North East region and major city of

कृिष व अथ व था:
रा का लगभग 63% काय बल कृिष और संबंिधत गितिविधयों म संल है ।
कुल फसल े के 79% से अिधक े का उपयोग खा फसलों के उ ादन के
िलए िकया जाता है ।
चावल यहाँ की मु ख खा फसल है। जूट,चाय, कपास, ितलहन, ग ा, आलू और
फल यहाँ की मु ख ावसाियक फसल ह।
रा के कुल े का 22.41% वन भूिम है।
असम के चाय के बागानों म दे श के आधे से ादा चाय का उ ादन होता है और
यह िव के संपूण चाय उ ादन का लगभग छठा िह ा है ।
खिनज तेल के उ ादन के संबंध म असम की अि तीय थित है।
कोयला, चूना प र, दु द िम ी, डोलोमाइट और ाकृितक गैस ऐसे अ खिनज ह
जो इस रा म पाए जाते ह।
19वी ं सदी म यहाँ बड़े पैमाने पर तेल के भंडार पाए गए और िदगबोई एिशया का
थम ते ल रफाइनरी थल बन गया।
असम की तीन ते ल रफाइनरी िदगबोई, नू नमती और बोंगाईगांव म ह और चौथी
एक पेटो-रसायन कॉ े है जो नुमालीगढ़ म है ।
वनों से लगातार लकड़ी, राल और पेड़ की छाल से टे िनंग साम ी िमल रही है और
बांस का योग कागज बनाने के िलए िकया जाता है ।

जूट, रे शम, कागज, ाईवुड िनमाण, चावल तथा ते ल की िमिलं ग के उ ोग थत ह।
Agriculture and Economy:
• About 63% of the state's work force is engaged in agriculture and allied
activities.
• More than 79% of the total cropped area is used for the production of
food crops.
• Rice is the major food crop here. Jute, tea, cotton, oilseeds, sugarcane,
potatoes and fruits are the main commercial crops here.
• Tea plantations in Assam produce more than half of the tea in the country
and constitute about one-sixth of the total tea production in the world.
• Coal, limestone, refractory clay, dolomite and natural gas are other
minerals found in this state.
• Large oil deposits were found here in the 19th century and Digboi
became Asia's first oil refinery site.
• Three oil refineries in Assam are at Digboi, Nunmati and Bongaigaon and
the fourth is a petro-chemical complex in Numaligarh.
• Apart from a public sector fertilizer factory in Namrup, sugar, jute, silk,
paper, plywood manufacturing, rice and oil milling industries are located in
the state.

• Roads: The total length of roads in Assam was 37,515 km, of which 2,836
km of National Highway was covered. Is included.
• Airline: Regular flights of civilian flights are from the popular Gopinath
Badardoloi Airport (Guwahati), Salonibari (Tezpur), Mohanbari (Dibrugarh),
Silonibari (Utt (Ri Lakhimpur), Kambhigram (Silchar), and Rovariyah (Jorhat).
