Nation and Nationalism

From one of Jose Rizal's famous phrases: "Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling
wika, ay daig pa ang hayop at malansang isda". This phrase is for those who do not love or care
about their land and the people around them are much worse than fish and smelly animals. In this
article I will comment on my answer to "Nation and nationalism". What is the difference
between the two and what is their significance for our country? I believe that understanding this
text will give a sense of connection to the way that our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal long ago
through his writings gave Filipinos a strong determination to fight for our country.
Each country has its different values and stereotypes, and the Philippines is no exception.
We Filipinos firmly believe that our country has the best values and attributes in the world.
Although we have been colonized by various countries, many of our ancient core values have
remained intact and are honored to this day. Filipinos are not perfect, but we have great features
and qualities that each of us should be proud of. Am I Filipino? My answer is yes, I am a pure
Filipino because my father and mother were born here in the Philippines. I grew up here in the
Philippines and I live and am a part of it. Like most Filipinos, I have a fair complexion, black
hair, brown eyes, a low bridge of the nose, but not very flat. I am the standard size that most
Filipinos are, I speak fluent Tagalog which is the main language of my country. When I was a
child, my parents taught us to be hospitable when there was a guest in our home. They also teach
us to respect elders by saying "po" and "opo" which means "yes" when responding to their
elders. Filipinos value their families so much that they tend to keep them intact for generations.
Filipinos are generous people. Even if we have very little, we always share it with others.
Filipinos are the most beautiful and loving people in the world. I am not saying this just because
I am Filipino; If you know us well, you will soon know. We are hardworking people ready to
work most of the day just to feed our families. Filipinos are like that. As good as Filipinos are,
we are not perfect, we also have negative traits that Filipinos really represent. An "whatever
happens, happens" or "whatever happens" attitude. We tend to leave our future to fate. We often
accept bad news or circumstances without trying to stop or change it. This negative quality is
also called fatalism. We also have the crab mentality, where people tend to push each other to
clear the way for their own benefit. Politicians especially go out of their way to ruin each other,
but that can also happen among ordinary people. I think it goes as far as selfishness.
The nation is a community of people who share the same language, religion, and culture.
The state is a political entity. It is the spirit and the center of everything because that is what
governs the nation. Lead the nation. The combination of nation and state is called the national
state. Then a community emerges with a common culture and government. This shows the link
between the people and the state. The development of the nation-state began with the Peace of
Westphalia when the 30-year war of religion ended. Also, it was developed after the Second
World War. When a colonial relationship breaks down, people assert themselves to form a nation
and build their state on the basis of their shared perception. Those who could not cope with the
rest are also building their state. Nation essentially refers to people who are determined together
by common interests, culture, and history, although they may be of different nationalities.
Nationalism, on the other hand, refers to an individual's attachment to her nation. It is patriotism
turned into sentiment. In short, it is an idea that your own country is superior to another country.
Nationalism is quite similar to patriotism, but they are different. Patriotism is the result of your
love for your country and the people around you. It is the will and the courage to defend your
own country, whatever the cost. The two are different because nationalism focuses on self-
interest, while patriotism focuses on the welfare of others. My example of nationalist people are
politicians and the military as patriots. There are three theories about the roots of the nation. The
first theory argued that there has always been a national identity and that the nation has ethnic
core. This theory concludes that divisions of people are formed naturally on the basis of the
assumption that there is an immutable cores within each one. The second theory is that
nationalism, national identity and the nation are shaped by modernity and these are products of
the modern state. And the third theory is that nationalism is socially constructed and imagined by
people who identify with a group. For an organization or a country to prosper, everyone must
care about the well-being of other people. Like our ancestors during the Spanish colonization.
Because of what Rizal has done and endeavored to build national ties against the Spanish, the
Filipinos unite and fight for our territory. In our world today, sadly, people have forgotten the act
of unity. Most people these days only focus on their well-being. This problem is the reason why
our country belongs to a third world country. Almost all politicians were corrupt. They're only
good in front of a crowd, but they really only care about their own interests. Challenges persist in
building our national unity.
In short, nation, nationalism, and patriotism are different things. A nation is a community
of people formed on the basis of a combination of common characteristics such as language,
history, ethnicity, culture and / or territory. A nation is, therefore, the collective identity of a
group of people that is defined by these characteristics. Nationalism focuses on self-interest,
while patriotism focuses on the good of others. There are three theories about the roots of the
nation. Primordialism shaped by modernity and the constructivist approach. The formation of the
nation state began after World War II when colonial ties were severed. And national unity is
important for our country to prosper. A politician / leader must value integrity and avoid
corruption. In addition, it is important to understand Rizal's efforts so that we can appreciate
them and make him our role model. Understanding our history is vital to us today.
