Foreword

This Part of this British Standard has been prepared under

the direction of the Mechanical Handling Standards Policy
Committee. It supersedes section 3 of BS 2655 : Part 8,
which has been rendered obsolescent by amendment.
It is the twelfth Part of BS 5655, relating to l i f t s and
service lifts, which is being progressively published to
supersede p'ortions of relevant Parts of BS 2655, the rele-
vant obsolescent requirements being retained for reference
purposes and to enable existing lift installations to be
maintained. The standard comprises the following Parts:
Part 1. Safety rules for the construction and installation
of electric lifts (implementing EN 81 -11. (To be used
in conjunction with PD 6500 'Explanatory supplement
to BS 5655 : Part l'.)
Part 2. Safety rules for the construction and installation
of hydraulic lifts (implementing EN 81-2)
Part 3. Specification for electric service lifts
"Part 4.
Part 5. Specification for dimensions of standard lift
arrangements (related to I S 0 4190/1 and I S 0 4190/3)
Part 6. Code of practice for selection and installation
Part 7. Specification for manual control devices,
indicators and additional fittings (implementing
I S 0 4190/5)
Part 8. Specificationfor eyebolts for lift suspension
Part 9. Specification for guide rails (implementing
I S 0 7465)
Part 10. Specification for testing and inspection of
electric and hydraulic lifts
Part 11. Recommendations for the installation of new,
and the modernization of, electric lifts in existing
buildings
Part 12. Recommendations for the installation of new,
and the modernizationof, hydraulic lifts in existing
buildings
t P a r t 13. Code of practice for vandal resistant l i f t s
The recommendations made in this British Standard are
based upon requirements specified in BS 5655 : Part 2,
and are intended to allow an installation of reasonable
standard to be modernized, in stages if necessary.
This Part of this standard relates to hydraulic lifts utilizing
oil as the hydraulic fluid. If, however, water hydraulic
lifts are being modernized the recommendations given in
this standard should be followed as closely as possible
and specialist advice should be sought.
