The title of this module is Basic Terms and Concepts in Household Resource
Management. This is an overview of the household resource management
including the management in the family as well as in other sphere of life and
maximum utilization of their resources to meet their goals.
There are two lessons in this module that will equip you with the necessary
theoretical and working knowledge and specific skills involved to prepare you
to become a responsible and effective household managers.
It is useful for you to know that each lesson can be completed in about four
weeks and you can spend 3 hours/week, if you really concentrate on it. The
module must be completed in 8 weeks.
The module utilizes the action learning model exemplified by the 4As
approach which leads you to four phases: Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, and
Application. The module has the following parts:
Let’s Try This - this part presents the pre-activity to activate your prior
knowledge and motivation in the lesson proper.
Let’s Do This—this part contains the activity for you to engage with either
individually or collaboratively in the group.
Let’s Think About This—this is the phase of the lesson that helped you to
analyze the given activity prior to the lesson proper.
Let’s Study Deeper—in this phase of the lesson, you are helped to arrive at
generalizations through the discussion of the concepts, stated facts, principles
written by authorities and scholars in the field.
Think and Reflect—this is the phase of the lesson in which what has been
learned is applied in content and real-life applications.
Complete the readings that can be accessed from the websites / links or
books to gain more information about the lesson. Also, you can give your
takeaways (key messages learned understood) in the readings you have
done.
You are also requested to complete the suggested readings or videos of the
module in your most convenient time to improve your learnings. The rubrics
corresponding to all the performance-based tasks in the module are provided
in the appendices tools in assessing the performance tasks.

people. A dwelling is considered to contain multiple households if meals or
living spaces are not shared.
Pre-Assessment
6. What are the basic factors that contribute to effective home management?
FEEDBACK
How well did you do the pre-test? Were you able to answer them all? You may
now compare your responses with those in the Key to Correction found on the
last page of this module. Some of your answers may not be expressed in
exactly the same words. However, as long as the ideas they express are
similar, mark them as correct.
If you correctly answered at least 5 of the 6 questions, it means that you have
a very good knowledge and understanding of the contents of the module. If
ever you got a score 3 and below, don’t worry this module will help and
provide you the important concepts, principles and the theoretical knowledge
in learning the foundations of Household Resource Management.
Are you ready to learn? I wish you an enriching and productive learning
experience. Have fun!

INTRODUCTION TO HOUSEHOLD
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Introduction
All of us want to lead a peaceful and fulfilling life. We want to get good food,
clothing, education and a house for comfortable living. Do you think that all
families get all these things? How will you know that all families enjoy a
comfortable and happy life? Observe the families living around you. Despite
living in the same locality, same kind of house with almost the same amount of
income and family size, you will found that those some of them are happy and
well-settled, while some others are dissatisfied.
Do you know the reason for these difference? What can be done to ensure
that all families are happy and satisfied? Let us find out how we can help
families to achieve this.
Resources
When you want to buy a dress, you need money. Similarly, when you want to
go to your friend’s house, you will walk or use a vehicle. You will need land
and money when your family wants to build a house. In the same way, we

need resources like knowledge, material things, skills, etc. to perform all our
activities. Thus, we find that we need a lot of things to do our day-to-day
chores. These can be called “resources”. Therefore, we can say that the
means used to meet our needs are called resources.
Types of Resources
You have earlier seen that we have so many resources like money, time, land,
knowledge, etc.
Money and salary, rent, interests from saving bank accounts;
Your house for living and working;
Time, like an hour a day, month, etc.;
Energy to work;
Knowledge, skills and abilities for doing work, like sewing, driving, swimming,
etc.
Material goods like household equipment, car, etc.;
Community facilities like park, hospitals, roads, bus, etc.
When you look at this list carefully, you will realize that there is a difference
between resources like money, house, equipment, etc. and resources like
knowledge, time, skills and abilities. A house or an equipment would have a
fixed cost for everyone, i.e. anyone can buy these things at the same price.
However, your knowledge or skill can be very valuable for you and your family
while it may not be of the same utility to others.
Your energy is a resource for you and can be used to do any work that you
want to do. But your energy cannot be used by others to perform what they
want to do. Similarly, if your mother has the skill of being a doctor, it is
something which belongs to her and only she can use it.
Thus, some resources become a part of individual and can be used only by
that person. Such resources is called “human resources”. Examples of human
resources are time, energy, knowledge, skills and abilities.

Characteristics of Resources
1. Resources are Useful: Resources can be used to fulfill our needs and
wants. That is why they are called “resources”.
2. Resources are limited in supply: Every resource is limited in supply.
You have only 24 hours in a day. Similarly, the salary obtained in cash is also
fixed. You have only limited supply of energy. In the same manner, resources
like water, electricity, fuel, etc., are all limited in supply. To get maximum
benefit, we must make efforts to conserve them.
3. Resources are interrelated: When you work, you need resources like
time, energy, skills, equipment, etc. Without adequate supply of time and skill,
you will not be able to use your energy to operate the equipment. Thus, you
will realize that all these resources are used at the same time because their
uses are inter-related.
While using resources, we have to ensure that we utilize them in such a way
that we get maximum benefit from their use. This way we will be able to get
maximum satisfaction. The different ways by which we can achieve this are
listed below.
Management
The home management term was first introduced by Maria Parloa in 1880
which simply meant anything that need to be accomplished with in the
household. It included all household activities like ironing, cleaning, planning a
party/ function, social behavior and so forth. Since Management relates to the
resources, home management changed its no-
menclature to family resource management. In simple words management
means ‘using what you have to get what you want’.
The following questions are intended to emphasize important ideas within the
lesson.
1. Briefly describe resources and management.

FEEDBACK
How well did you do the exercise? You may now compare your responses
with those in the Key to Correction found on the last page of this module.
If your score is 7 and above, it means you are doing great. If your score is 4
and below, it’s okay you can retake the exercise after you will restudy the
specific topics in this lesson.
During the present state of turmoil in the country, many political, social,
economic, technological and other changes are taking place and the families
have no other go except to cop up with the pressure of imbalanced economy
and social life. Human needs and desires change through time, research
progress and development, new technologies created etc.
In this process man gains more knowledge and controller over the natural and
technological environment. To meet the modern time demands, there is a
need for the members of the family to think and the make decision at each
and every step. Hence here comes the role of management in the families.
Let us now imagine what could have happened if you had not done or
managed what you had planned to do, as listed earlier? Yes, you could have
faced some of the following problems:
You will now agree that management is an important tool even to make a
simple job like making your trip a success. Similarly, many other situations in
our life also need management. We can therefore say that management plays
a significant role in our day-to-day life. Management helps you to:
PHILOSOPHY OF MANAGEMENT
Philosophy of Management
Let us take managing the family income. Here budgeting technique is very
important, where one plans the expenditure essential to be made well in
advance. If there is lack of awareness about the philosophical background for
the budget planned, then it becomes impractical and questionable. The way a
family uses its income whether blindly or consciously, is an expression of its
philosophy of living.
For example if the family gives importance to day to day presentability of its
living according to the changing trends, may decide to spend more on day to
day living than saving for the future security.
But families which give philosophical thinking to the future financial security,
may sacrifice some of their present needs to save for the future. These
families may use other resources instead of money, to meet their present
needs. Hence it is necessary for the families to formulate its philosophy clearly
so that it becomes easy for the family members to channelize the major
resources for productive purposes.
