MTec 115 – Workshop Theory and Practice III B

Second Semester SY 2019-2020
Course Completion

Boring Machine
Submitted by: Mendoza, Decerm B. Course and Year: BSME - 5

I. Introduction

Boring is a process of enlarging the hole that already holed and

locating the previously made hole with the help of single point cutting tool also
known as boring tool that is mounted on boring bar. Classified as one of the
most all-around machine equipment, used to bored a holes in heavy and
large machine parts. Can be executed with equivalent installation in drilling
and milling; In addition with screw for turning, cutting and grinding can also be
executed.

II. Application of the Machine to Shop Operations

 Boring machine is used to perform on inside diameter for the existing

holes.
 Can be used especially in large and heavy jobs in shop operations
such as steam cylinder engine, engine frames, machine housing and
any machine operational which is impossible to execute the holding
and rotate like drilling machine and engine lathe;
 Can be used to drill, bore rim holes, machining type parts like
gearboxes and engine blocks.
Horizontal Boring Machine and Vertical Boring Machine.

Figure 1. Horizontal Boring Machine. Figure 2. Vertical Boring Machine

Horizontal Boring Machine

When boring operations on larger pieces are required, this is the
method to use. The spindle is horizontally positioned in this
machine, and it is parallel to both the table and the ground. Boring,
shaping, facing, milling, and drilling are all done with a horizontal
boring machine. When parts are larger in size and a crane must be
put overhead, this is one of the most common applications.
Vertical Boring Machine
The operative tool is placed like standard lathe machinery in the
vertical type of boring machine configuration and performs all of the
normal lathe machinery operations such as cutting, turning, boring,
threading, and so on. Vertical boring machines can be found in
turbines, tires, pipelines, big frames, and machine tables, among
other applications.
The Major Difference
The fundamental distinction between vertical and horizontal boring
machines is the pattern of machine installation and configuration.
This refers to the placement of operating equipment as well as the
placement of work items.

Vision: A globally competitive university for science, technology, and environmental conservation.
Mission: Development of a highly competitive human resource, cutting-edge scientific knowledge

III. Machine Parts and Functions

Vertical Boring Machine Parts

1. Headstock Supporting Column

 One of the important part of Boring Machine. Contains main driving

mechanism and spindle mechanism.
 It is mounted on column and carries spindle assembly. Supports the feed
gear box and feed and speed the changing mechanism.
 The column delivers support to the headstock and control it up and down
exactly by the guide ways. The column which has hollow houses and is
heavily ribbed to add rigidity and some columns are steady, others may be
made to slide along the bed.

2. Pulley

 It is to counterbalance the weight of the headstock.

3. Headstock elevating screw

4. Boring Head

 The cutting end of a boring tool and the cutter holder of boring rod.

5. Boring Cutter

 Used to cut the existing hole.

6. Work piece

7. Headstock Supporting Column

 The column delivers support to the headstock and control it up and down
exactly by the guide ways. The column which has hollow houses and is
heavily ribbed to add rigidity and some columns are steady, others may be
made to slide along the bed

8. End Supporting Column

 Situated at the other end of the bed and houses the bearing block for
supporting a long boring bar.

9. Bearing Block

 It provides support on rotating shaft.

10. Saddle

 It provides a compound movement to the table. It helps the table move

axially as well as transversely to the spindle axis. It can also move
longitudinally on the bed and the table can move crosswise on the saddle.

11. Cross Slide

 Carriage moves at right angles to its principal direction of travel.

 The tables support the work piece and hold it in correct position provided
with a T- slot for clamping the work piece that moves perpendicular to the
axis of spindle.

13. Bed
 Support the column, table and other parts of Horizontal Boring Machine.
 Have a box type casting.
IV. Machine Operation
Boring operation is basically next after drilling operation since drilling
operation has limited operation especially if we want to produce a hole of any
given sizes. Following are the procedures for operating a boring machine:

 First, clean the machine surface to eliminate unnecessary macro

materials that might affect the operation.

 Second, insert the centering device into the hole on base.

V. Safety Precautions and Potential Hazards

For safety operation and to prevent the potential hazard of the boring machine
 Must wear proper eye and ear protection. Failure to wear eye protector
and ear protector might result to lifetime blindness caused by flying light
material and ear pain caused by extreme sound while doing the work.

 Do not leave the key in the chuck, remove the key from the chuck
immediately after removing the bit.

 Jewelry, gloves, ties, clothing and hair could become entangled in the bit
therefore do not wear jewelry, gloves, ties, loose clothing with long
sleeves, keep long hair tucked under a hat.

 Always use the rip fence as a backstop and hold the stock firmly against
both the worktable and the fence. If you can't use the rip fence, use the
miter gauge or clamp the stock to the worktable.

 Must only use accessories and bits designed to be mounted in power

drills. Using accessories not designed to be mounted for the machine
might result to an accident or damage to the machine.

metal to the worktable and backup stock, or the rip fence and back-up
stock.
