MTec 115 – Workshop Theory and Practice III B

Second Semester SY 2019-2020
Course Completion

Boring Machine
Submitted by: Mendoza, Decerm B. Course and Year: BSME - 5

I. Introduction

 Boring is a process of enlarging the hole that already holed and

locating the previously made hole with the help of single point cutting
tool also known as boring tool that is mounted on boring bar.
 Classified as one of the most all-around machine equipment, used to
bored a holes in heavy and large machine parts.
 Can be executed with equivalent installation in drilling and milling;
 In addition with screw for turning, cutting and grinding can also be
executed.

II. Application of the Machine to Shop Operations

 Boring machine is used to perform on inside diameter for the existing

holes.
 Can be used especially in large and heavy jobs in shop operations
such as steam cylinder engine, engine frames, machine housing and
any machine operational which is impossible to execute the holding
and rotate like drilling machine and engine lathe;
 Can be used to drill, bore rim holes, machining type parts like
gearboxes and engine blocks.

Vision: A globally competitive university for science, technology, and environmental conservation.
Mission: Development of a highly competitive human resource, cutting-edge scientific knowledge
and innovative technologies for sustainable communities and environment.

III. Machine Parts and Functions

1. Headstock Supporting Column

 The column delivers support to the headstock and control it up and down
exactly by the guide ways. The column which has hollow houses and is
heavily ribbed to add rigidity and some columns are steady, others may be
made to slide along the bed.

2. Pulley

 It is to counterbalance the weight of the headstock.

3. Headstock elevating screw

4. Boring Head

 The cutting end of a boring tool and the cutter holder of boring rod.

5. Boring Cutter

 Used to cut the existing hole.

6. Work

7. Headstock Supporting Column

 The column delivers support to the headstock and control it up and down
exactly by the guide ways. The column which has hollow houses and is
heavily ribbed to add rigidity and some columns are steady, others may be
made to slide along the bed
8. Bearing Block

 It provides support on rotating shaft.

9. Saddle

 It allows the work to be moved longitudinally on the bed.

10. Cross Slide

 Carriage moves at right angles to its principal direction of travel.

11. Table

 The tables support the work and is, therefore, provides T-slots for holding
various devices.

IV. Machine Operation

Boring operation is basically next after drilling operation since drilling

operation has limited operation especially if we want to produce a hole of any
given sizes.
Example: If we want to produce a 20mm diameter hole. First, we will drill
the material using 17mm drill bit, the largest diameter of a drill bi. After we
perform the drilling a 3mm diameter must be , the remaining 3mm
diameter will be perform by boring operation. And after that we now have
a 20mm diameter hole.

V. Safety Precautions and Potential Hazards

For safety operation and to prevent the potential hazard of the boring machine
 Must wear proper eye and ear protection. Failure to wear eye protector
and ear protector might result to lifetime blindness caused by flying light
material and ear pain caused by extreme sound while doing the work.
 Do not leave the key in the chuck, remove the key from the chuck
immediately after removing the bit.
 Jewelry, gloves, ties, clothing and hair could become entangled in the bit
therefore do not wear jewelry, gloves, ties, loose clothing with long
sleeves, keep long hair tucked under a hat.
 Always use the rip fence as a backstop and hold the stock firmly against
both the worktable and the fence. If you can't use the rip fence, use the
miter gauge or clamp the stock to the worktable.
 Must only use accessories and bits designed to be mounted in power
drills. Using accessories not designed to be mounted for the machine
might result to an accident or damage to the machine.

 And never drill nor bore metal freehand. It should be always clamp the
metal to the worktable and backup stock, or the rip fence and back-up
stock.
