Communication to the public

The following speech events that you have shared, as you may have noticed,
happened in different contexts. Communication does transpire in different manner such as
communicating with yourself, with another person, in a small group and even in the public
and these differences caused by speech contexts immensely determine one’s ability to
flexibly adapt to speech situations.

Let’s Reflect

How do you think learning the different types of speech contexts contribute to your
development as an effective communicator?

For me, learning the different types of speech context is very helpful, it can really
contribute for my development as an effective communicator. Knowing those
contexts can help a person on knowing what style of speaking he or she is going to
perform. For example if someone is from the other country, and someone tries to
talk to them but at the same time they are not familiar of the beliefs and values
performed on the specific country they are from, it can cause misunderstanding in
their conversation. It is the same with knowing the different types of speech context,
if it is not performed properly it could cause misunderstandings and it would come
out that I am kind of disrespectful.

IV. POST- SHOOT A THROWBACK
ASSESSMENT
ACTIVITIES Select any of the speech contexts that we have just learned today. You may choose from
the examples you have given on the Learning Exercises 1.

Reflect on that event and share your experiences, either good or bad. Examine the factors
that you think might have prohibited you to become an effective speaker or factors that you
think made you participate successfully on that speech context. Also, discuss the key points
or realizations you have learned from that speech event about yourself and your
communication abilities.

Through a Facebook feed, post and share your experiences where you can also add pictures
of that event or even actual video. Your post shall be uploaded to the class’s Facebook
page.

Don’t forget to put at the bottom part of your post the hashtag
#OralCommShootAThrowback.

Communication is the act of conveying meanings and from one entity or group to another
through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules. It is giving,
receiving or exchanging ideas, information, signals or messages through appropriate
media, enabling individuals or groups to persuade, to seek information or to express
emotions, this may also include body-language, skills of speaking and writing. But
communication is not all about communicating with an individual or crowd, it is also the
conveying of communication with our own selves. Intrapersonal communication is the
communication of oneself using internal vocalization or reflective thinking. What could be
an example of intrapersonal thinking?
I do always argue with myself if I should study and answer my modules or just lay down
on my bed and just browse on my phone, in short I procrastinate. Day by day this habit of
mine develops, so it upgrades, and every other day I regret letting myself procrastinate. I
have this habit of mine that before I sleep and while I am taking a bath I plan on what I am
going to do for the rest of the day, as I originally planned it I told myself that I should
finish all my activities and study today, so that the next day I can chill or I can just answer
my recently sent modules. When I woke up and done doing some stuffs I am confident that
I could do the tasks I aimed to do, and I was very excited for I know the next day I can just
chill. So as the first hours of me doing my activities, I feel energized with myself and I am
positive that I could finish my modules. But when I felt sleepy, I argue with myself if I
should sleep or to continue to answer my modules, and I ended up telling myself to sleep
and just continue on answering my modules when I woke up. When I woke up I feel the
laziness and that I just want to lay down on my bed and just play on my phone. Of course I
really wanted to finish my activities so I argue again with myself and I ended up deciding
that I’ll just play my phone. So the next day I regret my decision, and that I blamed myself
for letting my procrastination win my obedient self. I’ve learned that I should not let my
lazy side win my whole body for it would cause me an unproductive day or lifestyle, but I
know I will still procrastinate.
It would be best we could find time to talk unto ourselves for sometimes we only need to
talk-ourselves. It is not also bad to just chill for a meantime, but let’s make sure that we
finished on doing the stuffs we intended to do. Try to practice on living a productive life
for a better future.
