THE LOUISIAN PRAYER

O God, wellspring of goodness and blessings, we give you thanks and praise as one Louisian
community. The graces You incessantly grant upon us and Your divine providence have
sustained our beloved University throughout the years of mission and excellence.

Having been founded by the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we pray that You
keep us committed and dedicated to our mission and identity to serve the Church and the
society as we become living witnesses to the Gospel values proclaimed by Jesus. For if we are
steadfast in our good and beautiful mission, our works will bring success not only to ourselves
but also to those whom we are bound to love and serve.

Inspired by St. Louis our Patron Saint, who was filled with a noble spirit that stirred him to love
You above all things, may we also live believing that we are born for a greater purpose and
mission as we dwell in Your presence all the days of our life.

Grant all these supplications through the intercession of

Mother Mary and through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I. INTRODUCTION

You are expected to do a lot of reading and writing on the subject. Different activities,
assessments, and performance tasks will be given which aims to measure your level of learning.
In addition, I am strictly warning you against plagiarism, especially for an essay or any written
type of activity. Plagscan and shall be used to verify the authenticity of your work. Hence, any
plagiarized output will automatically be marked 0 (This includes copy-paste output from the
internet and your classmates.)
I hope that as a student, you shall do your part and give your best in learning and
accomplishing all your tasks. This new normal may not be easy, but we can still make the teaching
and learning process effective with both our efforts.

Before proceeding, please be advised to contact us for essential concerns:

II. LEARNING CONTENT

\

Last week, you learned about water resources, their types, profile, and examples. You
also learned more about how human activities are degrading our earth's water. It was also noted
that ways to conserve our water. In this module, you are about to know how human activities
affect every subsystem of the planet. You will see the impacts of human activities on the
environment, lifestyle, and human health.

Impacts of Human Activities

Ecosystems continually change through earthquakes, flooding, and lightning. Humans

reshape the natural environment as well, either locally or globally. People adversely affect the
environment by using fossil fuels, fertilizers, pesticides, and other toxic substances.

Environmental issues

1. Habitat Loss and Degradation

Habitat loss & degradation

are other examples of the
negative human impact on the
environment.

People indiscriminately cut

trees and destroy forests, homes
of so many species. The damage
is even more significant when a
keystone species is lost.

https://sciencing.com/effects-habitat-destruction-
environment-8403681.html
• Deforestation

Deforestation is the cutting of trees without adequate replanting. The cutting and clearing
of forests continue at an alarming rate.

• Land conversion

Uncontrolled mining, oil drilling, and the conversion of agricultural lands into factories,
subdivisions, and dams also cause habitat loss and degradation.

2. Biodiversity Loss

Extinction refers to the disappearance of

species. There are three levels of extinction:
LOCAL, ECOLOGICAL, and BIOLOGICAL.
Species at risk of extinction are classified as
either endangered species or threatened
species. Endangered species are in imminent
danger of extinction. Threatened species are still
abundant but declining in number and are likely
to become endangered in the foreseeable future.

4. Pollution

Pollution is the introduction of man-made or natural substances that make the

surroundings unclean and unhealthy and consequently affect the lives of living organisms.

Types of Environmental Pollution

A. Land Pollution- land pollution is the degradation of Earth's land surface due to poor
agricultural practices, mineral exploitation, and waste dumping.

B. Water Pollution- water pollution is the contamination of water by different harmful

substances from many human activities.

C. Air Pollution- air pollution is the accumulation of one or more pollutants in the air that, in
sufficient quantities, may harm organisms and certain things.

How do human activities affect the environment? Share your thoughts below.

One of the ways humans affect the environment is the generation of waste. If not managed
properly, these wastes will pollute and affect the environment. According to the National Solid
Waste Management Commission, a single Metro Manila resident generates 0.70 kg of solid
waste, more than twice higher than the global average of 0.3 kg per person per day.

SOLID WASTE

It is generally made up of objects or particles that accumulate on the site where they are produced.

TYPES OF SOLID WASTE

1. Municipal Waste

This includes materials that people in a

community no longer want because they
are broken, spoiled, or no longer helpful.
This type of waste comes from
households, commercial establishments,
institutions, and some industrial sources.

2. Agricultural Waste
covid-19-on-solid-waste-management/

These are derived from farming and poultry. It is organic and is used for soil-
enhancing activities. Other materials are burned as a source of energy. Too much
agricultural waste in the form of fertilizers is deposited into bodies of water, which can
cause eutrophication. Too much agricultural waste in the form of fertilizers is deposited
into bodies of water, which can cause eutrophication.

3. Industrial Solid Waste

Industrial solid waste comes from

industrial sources other than mining.
It includes various materials such as
demolition wastes, scraps from
manufacturing processes, and ash
from combustion. If they are
classified as hazardous, disposal
requires special landfills for their

4. Mining Waste

These wastes are generated in 3 ways (mining operations, milling operations, water
pumping to ponds.) In mining operations, large amounts of rock and soil are removed to
extract valuable ores, and the waste materials are left outside the mining site. In milling
operations, the grinding and sorting of materials produce solid waste called tailings, dumped
and stored in ponds near the milling site. Lastly, water pumped from mines flows from piles of
waste rock or tailings containing hazardous materials.

How important is the environment to human existence and survival? Share your
thoughts below.

METHODS OF WASTE DISPOSAL

1. Landfill
It is the cheapest and the most convenient method of waste disposal. It is
constructed above an impermeable clay layer that is lined with an impermeable
membrane. Every deposit of fresh garbage is covered with a layer of soil to prevent it from
blowing around. However, the threat of groundwater contamination reduces the use of this
practice.

2. Incineration
Involves burning in a controlled
manner using an incinerator. It is coupled
with high-temperature waste treatments are
recognized as thermal treatments. During
incineration, the waste material being treated
is converted into gas, particles, and heat.
These gases must be treated again to
eradicate pollutants before mixing into the
atmosphere.

3. Mulch and Compost
One of the simplest methods to dispose of wastes at homes. Composting is the
method of allowing the natural process of decomposition to transform organic materials
into humus-like material called compost.
4. Source Reduction
Refers to the method of designing, manufacturing, purchasing, using, and reusing
materials so that the amount of waste or its toxicity is reduced.

5. Recycling
It is the method of collecting throwaway materials and turning them into valuable
products.

Does the hierarchy of options in waste management sense? Explain your answer.

GENERALIZATION

Ecosystems continually change through earthquakes, flooding,

and lightning. Humans reshape the natural environment as well, either
locally or globally. People adversely affect the environment by using
fossil fuels, fertilizers, pesticides, and other toxic substances. The world
has been experiencing global environmental issues due to our activities.
Human activities adversely impact the planet. Habitat loss, land degradation, pollution,
biodiversity loss, overexploitation of resources, and other activities dramatically affects the
environment and the organisms living within the area. Waste materials also contribute to the
destruction of our environment. Hence, proper disposal and waste management are remarkably
advised to help preserve our planet.

REMEMBER:
