ACTIVITY 2

A. (ESSAY)

The execution of Jose Rizal proved to be a good decision for the Spanish
colonial government. Justify the statement.

Despite all valid pleadings, the military court was vindictive. The sentence of death was
unanimously approved. Polavieja confirmed it. The court martial's decision and order to
be shot at 7:00 a.m. On December 30, 1896, at Bagumbayan Field, Rizal was heavily
guarded and accompanied by Jesuits as he traveled. He walked all the way from Fort
Santiago to Bagumbayan.

He was dressed in a black woolen suit and a derby hat, and his arms were tied behind
him. As he walked, he reflected on his youth and his days as a student at the Ateneo. In
Bagumbayan, Spanish troops kept the crowd at bay while an artillery group stood ready
to prevent any attempt to rescue Rizal. Paciano, his brother who had joined the
Revolutionary forces, was said to have discouraged groups that wanted to save Rizal
because they would not be able to match Spanish firepower. The captain in charge of the
execution told Rizal Were to take a position, turn his back on the squad, and face the sea.
However, Rizal requested to face the firing squad because such a position was only
reserved for traitors, and he was not one of them. The captain couldn't do anything
because he was only following orders. As a result, when his request was denied, he asked
to be shot in the back instead of the head so that he could, at the end, turn his head and
body sideways and fall with his face upward. The captain agreed, and he also asked if he
wanted to kneel, but Rizal refused. He also refused to be blindfolded. A Jesuit priest then
ran up to Rizal and asked him to kiss the cruffix he was holding. Rizal turned his back on
the cruffix and thus against the firing squad. He was prepared for the execution. That
execution became Rizal's political epiphany, the beginning of his coming of age as a
Filipino aware of belonging to a single nation. It was to come to full fruition after his death
more than 20 years later, but by then, a generation of his fellow natives had been molded
into Filipinos with a sense of nationhood by his life's work.
