MODULE 4 Mathematics 9 (2nd Quarter)

Topic: Rational Exponents and Radicals

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of variation and radicals.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate and solve accurately problems involving radicals.
Learning Comptencies: The learner
a) derive the laws of radicals (M9AL-Iif-2); and
b) simplify radical expressions using the laws of radicals (M9ALIIg-2).
Time Frame: 1 week

Radical Expressions
The following laws of radicals can be applied when simplifying or evaluating radicals. The laws of radicals will provide
us with the means of changing algebraic expressions containing radicals to a variety of equivalent forms.

1) The nth root of a number raised to n is equal to the number.

√n x n=x∨( √n x )n=x
Examples:
16
21
3x – 4

3x – 4

8 – 4y

2) The product of two radicals having the same index n is equal to the nth root of the product of their
radicands.
√n x ∙ √n y=√n xy .
Examples:

3) The quotient of two radicals having the same index n is equal to the nth root of the quotient of their
radicands.
2

√n x = n x
√n y √ y
Examples:

4) The
nth root of the mth root of a number x is equal to a radical whose radicand is x and whose index is
the product of m and n.

Examples:

=3

=a

Simplify:

1) √ 63 x 9 y 4 =√ 9 ∙7 ∙ x 8 ∙ x ∙ y 4
¿ √ 9 √ x 8 √ y 4 √7 x

¿ √ 9 ∙ √¿ ¿ ¿ ¿

¿ 3 x4 y2√ 7 x

2) √ 45 x 2 y 3 =√ 9∙ 5 ∙ x 2 ∙ y ∙ y 2
¿ √ 9 √ x2 √ y2 √ 5 y

¿ 3 xy √ 5 y

√3 x 10 = 3 x 10 =√3 x 3=x
3)

√3 x7 x 7
9 x4 √ 9 x4 = 3 x2
4)
