Lesson 1
Simplifying Radicals
Take Note!
Laws of Radicals:
𝒏
1. √𝒙𝒏 = x
𝒏 𝒏 𝒏
2. √𝒙𝒚 = √𝒙 ۰ √𝒚
𝒏
𝒏 𝒙 √𝒙
3. √𝒚 = 𝒏 ; y≠0
√𝒚
𝒎 𝒏 𝒎𝒏
4. √ √𝒙 = √𝒙
2 3 6 √6
Examples: 1) √3 ۰ √3 = √9 = 3
1
***If there are radicals in the denominator, we simplify the fraction
into an expression free of radicals in the denominator. This process
is called rationalizing the denominator.
2
***To rationalize the denominator of √3 , we multiply the numerator
and denominator of the radicand by the expression of lowest power
that will convert the denominator into a perfect square. In this case,
2 3 6 √6
the number is 3. Hence, √3 ۰ √3 = √9 = 3

2) √5 = √5 ۰ 5
= √25 = 5
or 5

4) √8𝑦 3 = √8𝑦 3 ۰ 2𝑦
= √16𝑦 4 = 4𝑦 2
or 4𝑦 2
