A Personnel Qualification

Personnel performing the test are qualified and approved.

A1
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1022)

A Equipment

Bubble forming solution is a type of solution that does not break away
from the area to be tested and bubbles does not break rapidly due to air
drying or low surface tension.
A1
(NOTE: Soaps or household detergents shall not be used for the bubble
forming solution.)
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1031)

Vacuum box is made of the following:

a. 6" wide by 30" long and contain a window in the side opposite
the open bottom.
b. The open bottom edge is equipped with a suitable gasket to
form a seal against the surface to be tested.
A2
C. provided with valves, lighting and test gage with a range of
0 psig to 15 psig
d. The test gage have a range of 0 psig to 15 psig or 0 inch Hg to
30 in Hg
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1031)

Gage is connected to the component or to the component from a remote

A3 location readily visible to the operator.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Para. T-1031 b)
All dial indicating and recording type gages are calibrated against a
standard deadweight tester, a calibrated master gage, or a mercury
A4
column, and recalibrated at least once a year.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Para. T-1061 a)

B Testing
The surface areas to be tested are dry, free of oil, grease, paint, or other
B1 contaminants that might mask a leak.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Para. T-1041)
Surface temperature of the part to be tested shalll not be below
B2 40°F (4°C) nor above 125°F (52°C) throughout the examination.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1071)
The bubble forming solution is applied by flowing, spraying, or brushing
the solution over the examination area before placement
B3
of the vacuum box.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1072)
The vacuum box is placed over the solution coated section of the
B4 test surface and the box evacuated to the required partial vacuum.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1073)
A partial Vacuum of 70 kPa (10 psi) gage shall be applied for vacuum 32-SAMSS-005
B5
box testing. Para 6.6.3

No.
The required partial vacuum (differential pressure) shall be maintained
B6 for at least 10 sec examination time.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1074)
An overlap of 2 in. (51 mm) minimum for adjacent
placement of the vacuum box shall be used for each
B7
subsequent examination.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1075)

C Evaluation

The presence of continuous bubble growth on the

surface of the material or weld seam indicates leakage
C1
through an orifice passage(s) in the region under examination.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1077)
The area under test is acceptable when no
C2 continuous bubble formation is observed.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1081)
When leakage is observed, the location of the leak(s) are marked. The
vacuum box shall then be vented and the leak(s) repaired as required by
the referencing Code Section. After repairs have been made, the
C3
repaired area or areas shall be retested in accordance with the
requirements of this Appendix.
(Reference: ASME Sec.V, Article 10, Appendix II, Para II-1082)
The result of test and test information are recorded in a test report
containing the following minimum information:
(a) date of test;
(b) certification level and name of operator;
(c) test procedure (number) and revision number;
(d) test method or technique;
(e) test results;
(f) component identification;
(g) test instrument, standard leak, and material identification;
(h) test conditions, test pressure,
(i) gage(s)—manufacturer, model, range, and identification number;
(j) temperature measuring device(s) and identification number(s);
(k) sketch showing method or technique setup.
