A General Requirements
Radiographic procedure approved by Inspection department is available SAEP-1143,
A1 to verify the RT requirements and Techniques applied. Para 5.1
Personnel performing radiography are certified to a minimum of Level II
per the certifying organization's written practice/ requirements of SAEP-1143
A2 ANSI/ASNT CP-189. Para. 5.2
(Refer to SAIC-RT-2002 for personnel qualifications)
Radiographic personnel have passed the Radiation Safety examination
administered by the Saudi Aramco Loss Prevention Department and are SAEP-1143
A3 in possession of a current Saudi Aramco Radiographer Permit issued by Para. 4.3

Protective measures are taken by radiographic personnel to insure that
no individual is exposed to radiation in excess of the prescribed limits (as SAEP-1143
A4
mandated in SAEP-1141 and GI-0150.003). Para. 6.2.2

Weld ripples or weld surface irregularities on both the inside (where

accessible) and outside are removed to such a degree that any such SAEP-1143
A5
irregularities appearing on the radiographic image will not mask nor be Para. 5.3.1
confused for any discontinuity.
Weld has been visually examined and accepted prior to release for SAEP-1143
A6
radiography. Para. 5.3.2

Lead letter "B" is attached to the back of each film holder during each
exposure to determine if backscatter radiation is exposing the film. SAEP-1143
A7
(Note: The dimensions of letter "B" shall be 13mm (0.5 inch) of Para. 5.4
height and 1.5mm (0.0625 inch) thickness)

Final radiography for acceptance of the weld/material shall be

performed after final post weld heat treatment. SAEP-1143
A8
(Note: When the time of the RT examination is not stated in the Para. 5.5
referenced code or project specification. )

B Location Markers and Film Identification

Weld Joint number and location of weld to be radiographed were

positively verified to conform with the RT request. The following
identification on the RT Request corresponds to the completed weld to
be radiographed as minimum:
a) Weld Number
B1 Best Practice

Para. 5.3.3
two sets of arrows or V's shall appear on the film; one set near each end
of the interpreted area of the film.

The location markers (Number belt) used is in "inch" units umless

specifically noted in the report and are spaced around the circumference
of the piping per the requirements listed in the table below (Table 6).
Table 6 – Number Belt Spacing
NUMBER SPACING Nominal Pipe Size Spacing

C Exposure Techniques
Single wall exposure technique described below is used for radiography
whenever practical.

Double wall techniques described below shall be used when it is not
practical to use a single wall technique.
1. Double Wall Exposure - Single Wall Viewing (DWE/SWV)
technique. Radiation passes through two walls and only the
weld (material) on the film side wall is viewed for acceptance
on the radiograph. For full weld coverage of circumferential
welds at least 3 exposures taken 120º apart shall be taken.
2. Double Wall Exposure - Double Wall Viewing (DWE/DWV)
Technique radiation passes through two walls and both walls
are viewed for acceptance on the radiograph. These
techniques shall only be used for materials and welds in piping
3.5 inch NPS or less.

Table 4 provides the Technique and Exposure Requirements based on

pipe sizes.

SAEP-1143
C2
Para. 7.1

For the elliptical DWE/DWV technique the radiation beam shall be offset
at the weld at an angle sufficient to separate the images of the source
side and film side portions of the weld. SAEP-1143
C3
(NOTE: The elliptical technique requires at least 2 exposures 90º to Para. 7.4.2
each other to achieve complete coverage of the weld.)

In the superimposed DWE/DWV technique, the source shall be at right

angles to the weld and the image of both walls are superimposed.
NOTE: The superimposed technique, as a minimum, requires three (3) SAEP-1143
C4 exposures taken either 60° or 120º to each other to achieve complete Para. 7.4.3
coverage of the weld.

D Equipments and Materials

Radiation Sources used are one of the following:
