VI. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A. CHILD

Marvin was born at Manay, Davao Oriental but grew up at Mati City. His major
life events started when his father passed away when he was 9 years old. A few months ago
after his father's burial, their house burned down without knowing the reason. His mother left
them for another family. As a result of this, he lived in severe poverty, to the point where he
lacked educational attainment, having barely completed Grade 2. He has siblings who are living
in the charity but he didn't go with them because he doesn't like being in a charity house.
According to him he has feelings of anger towards his mother because she is the primary
reason for their hardships in life. In addition, he slept in an outpost outside a hospital in Mati.
He had also moved from one neighborhood to another. This is the reason why he met another
boy in the street who had money that captured his attention. He asked where and how he got
the money because he also wanted to do the same for money. This leads him to steal money
and significant things from other people for survival. Based on his statements, he usually does
this in a boarding house or college dormitories. At 12 years old, he started using shabu and
other vices. At 14 years old, he was jailed for drug usage but strived hard to escape from prison
while traveling. This is the main event that led him to Davao City. Without a home in Davao, he
ended up in a cemetery in Bankerohan, Davao City where he joined a group known as Laras
Group. He continued his bad habits such as drugs and other vices. Eleseo does these things
because according to him it lessens his hunger and at the same time has the feeling of
belongingness. Unfortunately, the day came when he was caught on the act and was referred to
Bahay Pag-Asa. While living inside Bahay Pag-Asa, he said that he committed a cardinal
offense (violence) that recommended him to reflect himself inside the reflection room for 1
month with no TV, no visitation, no sports and no phone calls. But unfortunately he doesn't have
any contact with anyone in his family that visits him because he doesn't even know how to
contact his mother.

B. FAMILY

Eleseo has 4 siblings. Before his father died, the relationship of his parents was already
unpleasant. Based on his statement his mother has married and has a family and his father
also. That is the reason why his mother and father are not getting married. According to him, the
main cause of the death of his father was because of his mother who was in love with another
man. The moment his father learned that his mother was having an affair with someone, he
hurriedly went after his mother. But before his father even got there, he was accidentally hit by a
car and died on the spot. He lived for 2 months with the new family of his mother but he cannot
feel the sense of belongingness from them. His younger brother, Milky, got involved as well in
dangerous activities which lead him to death. His other siblings lived in the charity house, but
Marvin chose to live in the street than to be with his siblings. The succeeding events of his life
mainly revolve without the presence of his family members.

C. COMMUNITY

Eleseo stayed in Bankerohan, Davao City and he slept in the Brokenshire

Cemetery. In Bankerohan, It is a place known as the biggest marketplace in the city. Many
people go to the area everyday. It was even a place where it seems that night and dawn never
exists. The place is lively and active 24/7. According to him he committed many crimes like
stealing money and objects like cellphones, sniffing rugby and other vices in the cemetery and
stealing food to eat.

VII. ASSESSMENT

Marvin Eleseo is a 17 years old boy who has a problem identifying letters and has
difficulties in reading and writing. This is due to the fact that he only finished Grade 2 and did not
continue his education for the reason that her mother has another family after his father died.
Growing up without any parents, he was not taught various wisdom and moral values. He
aspires for a sense of belongingness and love from family. With this, he chose to be a street
child rather than continuing his studies. He also joined a group of youths who only did nothing
but stealing and doing other bad habits.
Marvin is currently under the supervision of Bahay Pag-Asa. He recognizes that he has
a problem, and his desire to be helped is demonstrated by his stated intention to see the worker
when it is called. As of now he sits in during class hours in Alternative Learning School but he
hasn't been given a module yet because of his lack of basic education. If his problem is not
addressed immediately, Marvin might go back to what he was doing before or he could even get
worse and his chance to change and his dream will disappear. Furthermore, up until this
moment, he still does not know himself and he lacks own identity because of these life events.
Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory is the applicable theory for this case.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivation theory that argues that an individual's conduct is
dictated by five categories of human needs which are physiological needs, safety needs, love
and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. According to this theory,
higher needs in the hierarchy occur when people feel they have properly satisfied the prior
need. In this case, Marvin cannot move to another level of needs because the lower needs are
not yet satisfied or fulfilled. The first level is not met. Thus, he cannot move forwards into higher
needs. He is not emotionally stable, physiological needs are not achieved, he seeks love and
belongingness from his family, and etc.
According to Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory, childhood events have a
significant impact on our adult life, molding our personalities. His psychosexual theory of
development states that personality develops during childhood and is critically influenced
through a succession of five psychosexual stages. Each developmental stage provides a kid
with a conflict between biological desires and cultural expectations; skillfully navigating these
internal conflicts leads to mastery of each developmental stage and, finally, a fully developed
personality. This is the most acceptable theory to reflect Marvin Eleseo’s current life
circumstances. Because of the fundamental reason of having no parents while growing up, he
battled greatly in his childhood years to create himself and develop self-identity. Childhood
events, according to Sigmund Freud, have a tremendous impact on our adult lives, shaping our
personalities.
