II. SOURCES OF INFORMATION:

1. Client
2. Client’s Aunt

III. PROBLEM PRESENTED:

The client is seeking for financial assistance as the family is incapable of defraying the cost of her
left eye operation.

IV. FINDINGS

The client, 17 years of age, resides with her grandmother. Their house is made of wooden
materials with nipa roofing. They do not have electricity. Her sister, D., supports their needs by working
as a housemaid in Manila. Her mother is also in Manila but she has her second family already. She sends
money for their daily necessities every now and then.

When E. was 2 years old, glass from a broken mirror caught her left eye. The mirror, which was
used by her uncle, was put on top of a cabinet near her crib. It accidentally fell at the edge of the crib and
broke. Some fragments of the glass fell on the child and entered her eye. Although she was brought to the
hospital for treatment, the doctor was only able to clean and remove the broken glass from the eye,
however, her eyesight was already damaged. This made E. visually impaired (vision loss for the left eye).

The client was able to attend elementary school but due to financial instability, she was not able
to enroll in high school. As she grew older, she noticed that her left eye was getting bigger and was
aching so they had to bring her to a doctor for consultation. She was advised to take medicines to ease the
pain and control it from enlarging. Unfortunately, no improvements occurred.

Last August, they returned to the doctor and she was recommended for an eye operation as the
swelling continued. The doctor told them that the operation has to be done the soonest possible time as it
may cause tumor, affecting her right eye and brain.
Despite her condition, she helps her grandmother in the household chores. Then again, she cannot
do so steadily now as there were times when the pain is excruciating and causes too much discomfort.

She has decided to seek for assistance since they cannot afford the expenses for the operation.
Her sister’s support is barely enough for their daily needs and her mother does not regularly send help
since she has her new family now. Their relatives are financially hard-up like them, thus they cannot also
extend financial support.

V. ASSESSMENT

Despite her visual impairment, E. was still able to do her share of work at home although when
her situation became worse because of the swelling and pain in her left eye, she cannot anymore perform
household chores very well. She appears to have the drive to get better as evidenced by her seeking
assistance from the agency since the family is financially incapable of bearing the expenses for her
operation.

Based from the presented information, the client is experiencing a problem, which is caused by
their economic condition. Still, it is a problem that can be considered to be manageable since there are
resources within the system that can be tapped so that it can be resolved. Financial assistance may be
provided by the agency to help augment for the required funds for her operation. Assistance from PCSO,
DSWD and the social service unit of the hospital where the operation will be done can also be explored as
additional resource that may be tapped.

Furthermore, her family’s support, especially of her grandmother, would be valuable during these
times that she is in pain and distressed because they cannot afford the expenses. This support, her
motivation to get better and the assistance that she will obtain from the agency could be the keys in
helping her recover from what she is undergoing at present. Since the client decided to directly cope by
facing her problem squarely, it is highly probable that she will be able to overcome this situation.
