Selection of Junior Field Assistant G2- WASH for IOM AFG

Written test:

Guidance note: please ensure that answers are accompanied by calculations and justifications.

Time : 90 min (answers need to be submitted by email between 90 minutes of receiving the test).

Practical problem No. 1:

You have been tasked to provide safe water in a drought affected community by means of water trucks. The community
has 476 households, with an average household size of 7 members. The project you are working for has funding worth
of USD 90,000 for water trucking, which is considered as an interim measure until IOM completes the drilling of
boreholes and installation of handpumps to provide a sustainable and more durable solution enough to meet the needs
of the community. There are 3 water trucks allocated, one with 2,000 liters, other with 3,000 liters and one with 10,000
capacity. The water trucks of 2,000 and 3,000 liters can make maximum 6 trips per day, while the 10,000 liters one can
deliver only two (2) trips of water. The cost per trip for the 10,000 liters truck is USD 600, while the trucks of 3,000 and
2,000 cost 400 and 300 USD per trip respectively.

Based on the information above, can you please determine:

Q1: What is the maximum number of days that the drilling of boreholes and installation of handpumps needs to last to
be completed in order to ensure that water is constantly delivered (without interruption) to the affected community in
accordance with Sphere standards.

Ans 1: given data :

Total hous holds: 476 with 7 member
As per sphere standard water consumption rate is 15 liter per person
Total persons in community : 476*7=3332 persons
As per sphere standard : 3332*15liters=49980 liters
Thus we have to provide 49980 liters for selected HH
We have to build 100 bore hole for affected community
Computation: 49980/500 = 100 borehols

As per standards we Will drill one borehole in 2 days

Total days required for 100 borehols : 2*100=200 days

Results: construction time of borhols are 200 days

Q2: What would be your recommendation for the total capacity of storage (in cubic meters) at the water distribution
point in the community?

Ans2: given data

HH= 476 with 7 members

Total persons : 476*7= 3332 persons

15 liters per person per day as sphere standard

3332*15=49980 liters

Capacity of storage in cubic meters = 49980/1000= 49.98 cubic meter

Open question:

Q3: Please prepare a detailed SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for the rehabilitation of boreholes fitted with
handpumps in Afghanistan.

Ans 3: we have to provide 49980 liters for 3332 persons of 476 HH according to sphere 15 liters for person per day is
required a borehole provide 500 liter per day

We Will find numbers of people per one borehole : 3332/100= 33.32 persons per borehole
