LESSON
Why Dance is Good for Fitness?
Getting fit does not have to be the chore it’s often perceived to be. Instead, as people all
around the globe are finding out each day, dancing is one of the best fitness workouts there is.
Physical inactivity is an issue that needs to be addressed on a global scale. It is a problem
that affects countries regardless of income and is poised to have an increasingly negative impact
on rates of obesity, non-communicable disease, and overall health. In order to understand physical
inactivity at a systemic level, it's important to understand the global issues at play.
A number of problems are associated with dance physical activity:
1. Not in the habit of being physically active
Not everyone has a routine. Every day can be different. You might have a block of
time on some days for exercise, but on other days it might be short and when you can fit it
in.
• Make a large sign to remind you to be physically active. Put it where you can see it
easily, such as on your refrigerator, front door, TV or telephone.
• Ask a family member or friend to remind you to be active throughout the week.
• Reward for meeting your physical activity goals — treat yourself to a new CD or book, a
manicure, a massage or special outing.
2. Lack of time
Time is crucial in whatever one does or plans to do. People might be interested in
physical activity but have limited time because of the demands of their job or study.
• Break up activities into a few short sessions instead of one longer session.
• Watch less TV. Giving up one TV show gives you 30 minutes more in your day.
• Combine physical activities with other things you like to do. For example, meet a friend
for a walk instead of for coffee or attending Zumba.
• Be physically active during your lunch break (before you eat) at least once or twice a
week.
• As soon as you’re well enough to leave the house, set a physical activity plan for the
week.

• After you’ve been sick, start with a light week of activity so you don’t get too tired.
• Slowly work your way back to your usual physical activity levels.
5. Pain or injury
Dance may look effortless, but it requires a lot of strength, flexibility and stamina. It also
comes with a high risk of injuries. Whether you are a dancer, the parent of a dancer or a dance
teacher, you should be aware of the most common dance injuries and learn how to avoid them.
• Switch to a type of activity that doesn’t bother the injured or painful area.
• If it’s arthritis pain, try exercising in warm water (such as a pool or Jacuzzi).
• See a doctor for treatment. Ask what types of physical activities you can do.
D.3 ENGAGEMENT
With social distancing keeping most people in their homes, it's easy to get bored during this
stressful time. Fortunately, there are countless TikTok creators who are helping you pick up a
hobby, discover the perfect workout routine, or demonstrate a fun in-home activity that you can do
to keep your mind active. We know social distancing can be tough, but the TikTok community is
here to remind you that you're not alone even if you're by yourself.
