objectives:
• represents point, line and plane using concrete and pictorial models. (M7GE-IIIa-1),
• illustrates subsets of a line (M7GE-IIIa-2), and
• classifies the different kinds of angles (M7GE-IIIa-3).

Write it below on the table and answer the question below
Point Line Plane

1. How did you find the activity?

2. Were you able to identify the examples of points, lines and planes?
3. What is common in the objects/things you listed in each category?
4. Based on your observation, how will you describe a point? a line? a plane?

 DEVELOPMENT (D)
Undefined Terms in Geometry
There are three basic terms in geometry which we refer to as undefined terms. These are point, line,
and plane. We classify these as undefined terms because the definitions of these terms are not precise.
Instead, we use representations to describe them.

Learning Task 2

Subset of a Line
Ray and Line Segment
A ray has only one endpoint and extends infinitely in only one direction. It is denoted by its endpoint
followed by another point in the ray. The ray in the figure below is AB, we can also name it as ray
AC. In symbol we can write ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐴𝐵 or ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐴𝐶

This is ray DE. We can also name it as ray DF or ray DG. In symbol 𝐷𝐹 𝐷𝐺

Illustrative example 3.

T S R Q
This is ray TS. We can also name it as ray TR or ray TQ. In symbol ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑇𝑅 or ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑇𝑄

A line segment has two endpoints. It is also called a segment. It has a definite length measured from
one endpoint to another and it is named by its endpoints. A vinculum is placed above its name to
differentiate it from the name of a line and a ray where the same letters are used

A B C D

AD is line a line segment. The points A, B, C and D are on the line segment AD. In notation
we write ̅𝐴𝐷
̅̅̅̅ or simply line segment AD. We can also name it as ̅𝐷𝐴
̅̅̅̅
Other line segment formed are
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 or ̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐴 ; ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐶 or ̅̅̅̅
𝐶𝐴;
Note: if two segment have the same points they are considered as congruent segment
meaning they counted as 1

them?

ANGLE
An angle is a figure formed by two rays with a common endpoint, and which are not on the
same line. The two rays are the sides of the angle and the common endpoint is the vertex

Illustrative example 5.
∠ABC is formed by two rays
namely ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐵𝐴 and ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐵𝐶 . Since B is the
verte
angle intersection of rays then it is the
x
1 formed vertex of the angle.

An angle is named using a number, vertex or a vertex and points. If three letters are used to name an
angle, the middle letter should be the vertex. If one letter is use, it should be the vertex
In this example the angle can be name as ∠ABC or ∠B or ∠1.

Illustrative Example 6
In this given figure below, there are two angles formed with the same vertex. You will be confused if you
use ∠O to name these angles. Thus, it is better to name the angles using three letters like ∠AOB and
∠BOC or using number like ∠1 and ∠2.

An angle is measured using a protractor. The unit used to measure angles is degree. When
you determine measure an angle, place the center mark of the protractor at the vertex of the
angle and then placing the 0-degree mark on one side of the angle. Afterwards, read the number
where the other side crosses the scale. You can also use a protractor in constructing an
angle of a given measure

Illustrative example 7. Find the measure of ∠ABC

The measure of angle ∠ABC is 450

There are three kind of angle based on its measure, namely:

1. An acute angle is an angle whose measure

is less than 90°.
Example:
The measure of ∠ABC is 54°. Thus, ∠ABC is
an acute angle.

2. A right angle is an angle whose measure is

exactly 90°.
Example:
The measure of ∠ABC is 90°. Thus, ∠ABC is
a right angle.

3. An obtuse angle is an angle whose measure is

greater than 90⁰ but less than 180°.
Example: The measure of ∠ABC is 130°.

Thus, ∠ABC is an obtuse angle.
