Where 𝑘𝑡 is the torsional stiffness coeficient.

The solution of 𝜃 as a function of time is of the following form:

𝜃(t) = A1 sin(ωn . t ) + A2 cos(ωn . t )
where A1 and A2 are arbitrary constants to be evaluated by the initial conditions.
Thus, the solution can be also written in the form
ሶ ωn ) sin(ωn . t ) + 𝜃o cos(ωn . t )
𝜃(t) = (𝜃o/

Example
The column system shown in the figure below is 100 m high and is made of reinforced concrete with a tubular
cross section of inner diameter 2.4 m and outer diameter 3 m. The mass is 3 ×105 kg. By neglecting the mass of the
column (𝐽𝑏 = 0) and assuming the Young’s modulus of reinforced concrete as 27 GPa, determine the system
natural frequency.

Note that the beam stiffness is 𝑘𝑏 = 3 , 𝑘 = 100 𝑘𝑁/𝑚 and 𝑘𝑡 = 50𝑘𝑁. 𝑚/𝑟𝑎𝑑

Solution
𝑙 = 100 𝑚, 𝐸 = 27 𝐺𝑃𝑎, m = 3 ×105 kg
