Learning Episode Objective

At the end of the learning episode, Pre-Service Teachers (Field Study students) are expected to:
✓ Determine the characteristics of a school environment that is safe, secure, and is
supportive of learning (PPST 2.1.1).

Observe

Exploring the School Environment

As you move around the campus, observation forms are provided for you to document your
observations. It is advised that you read the entire worksheet before exploring the campus (either
face-to-face, hybrid, or online). A good understanding of the activities and tasks to be
accomplished in the activity sheets will yield better learning results.

Name of the school observed: Tabunan National High School

Date of observation: January 25, 2022

Mode of observation: ___ Physical ___ Hybrid / Online

Write your observation here:

To tell you the truth, I was astonished at Tabunan National High School. Despite the fact
that I've seen a lot of things that could be better, I've always wished to attend a school like
Tabunan. I was astounded by the students' competitiveness despite attending a simple school.

The first thing I noticed was how clean the school grounds were. That is to say, everything
is safe, well-organized, and distraction-free. Books are properly stored in cabinets, tables are
well-organized, and there are no trash cans elsewhere in the library, for example. In the science
and TLE laboratories, tools and equipment are organized in cabinets according to their
intended use, and books and seats are neatly arranged, ensuring that students are safe and
secure.
Second, there is good air quality in all structures. Ceiling fans are installed in libraries,
laboratories, offices, and classrooms, as shown in the images, and windows are large enough
to allow fresh air into the space. This allows students, particularly those who suffer from
respiratory problems during the summer, to feel at ease in class. This also helps students
concentrate on classroom lessons and activities. Another advantage is that the rooms are large
enough for students to participate in class activities and perform a variety of movements,
particularly in the science laboratory, which can accommodate a group of regular classes in
various science activities.
Finally, I noticed that almost every classroom has either Smart TVs or projectors, including
the science and TLE laboratories and the library. I've seen multiple cabinets in each facility that
keep things organized and safe for everyone. These observations lead me to believe that the
school is a good place for students to learn and study.

Analyze

Instruction: Answer the following questions.

1. How the school campus and its available facilities do impact the learning of students?

One aspect of a student's learning and development is the availability of school

facilities and other resources that can help them improve their grades. A lack of air quality
and a poorly ventilated area, for example, may cause discomfort to students, particularly
those who have difficulty breathing. As a result, students' concentration and health may
suffer, and their learning process may be hampered. Another consideration is classroom
size; if a classroom is too small for a particular group of students, participation in activities
will suffer. Having access to necessary school facilities may also aid in improving
educational quality. As a result, if these critical resources are available in the classroom,
students will be able to learn more effectively.

2. How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development?

The school site and its available facilities play an important role in a child's and
adolescent's emotional, physical, social, and psychological development because it is one
of the many factors that encourages or motivates them to participate in a variety of school
activities and performance tasks, which in turn improves not only their learnings but also
their abilities and interests in specific areas such as baking and experimenting. It also helps
students develop relationships and social interactions with one another. Additionally,
school helps students develop appropriate behavior. Students' strengths, skills, and
academic performance are also improved by stimulating their curiosity and willingness to
learn in facilities like the science laboratory, where students are given challenging tasks to
make good observations, analyses, and measurements in any laboratory task.

3. How does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating learner-centered learning?

We all understand the importance of school facilities for students' learning and
development. When teachers facilitate learner-centered learning, they act as facilitators of
their students' learning. If the children are still learning in the current environment, one of
their responsibilities is to assist them. For example, in a classroom, teachers should know
if students are still learning and if factors such as noise, the classroom seating arrangement,
how things are not organized, and if there are trashes that prevent them from learning well
are not obstructing their learning. Teachers must know how to create a learning
environment for children in the classroom while also meeting their physical, social, and
emotional needs.

Reflect

Instruction: Answer the following questions.

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why not?

I'd like to do so because it's an opportunity for me. I also have a place to stay near that
school. So, in a nutshell, I'd like to teach at that school. However, if given the chance or
assigned to teach at a different school, I would be ecstatic because a new setting offers new
opportunities for learning, development, progress, and growth. Being in any environment
would put my ability to adapt to new situations and people with different personalities to
the test. If I am assigned to a different school, I will be placed outside of my comfort zone,
which will provide me with challenging tasks and experiences that will aid in my
development as a future educator.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

A learning-friendly school campus is one that follows consistent procedures to keep

the school safe, clean, orderly, and distraction-free, as well as to meet the students'
physical, social, and psychological needs. There are also facilities for challenging activities.
These requirements imply that there must be clean and comfortable rooms for both girls
and boys, that classrooms must have adequate ventilation and air quality, that classrooms
must be large enough for all students to be able to participate fully in class activities, and
that students with breathing difficulties should not be inconvenience. There must be good
lightings, the surroundings must be clean, safe, and in order., there should not be trashes
just anywhere else because this could distract and discourage students from learning well,
the campus must be away from noisy areas for students to peacefully do their work and
have a good time studying, and there should be facilities like science laboratories and TLE
laboratories where challenging activities are given and students learnings and
development are assured during lessons.

3. Are the school facilities are fit to prepare students to compete under the Fourth
Industrial Revolution especially in education sector? Why? Why not?

I believe it is insufficient to confront and compete with the Fourth Industrial needs for
school facilities. There are many factors to consider, and given that education is a high
priority, I believe the government will continue to focus on it, but they should increase it to
allow for the development of more school facilities.

4. In the future, how can you contribute to improve the status of the school environment
you just observed? Determine its unique features and characteristics.

I believe that the best thing I could do to help improve the status of the school I just
visited is to provide objective feedback on the necessary facilities and improvements that
the school should have, along with an explicit and detailed explanation of why this is
important. Of course, I'm aware that they were aware of it. However, I believe this would
still be beneficial because they would be made aware of it.

Episode Test/Learning Artifact/Portfolio

Instruction: Through any of these – a composition, a photo essay, a spoken poetry, a sketch or
drawing, or a music video, show your idea of an effective school environment that is safe, secure,
and is supportive of learning while addressing the physical, social and psychological needs of the
students.

Write your answer in the box below.

(If you opted to choose either a composition, photo essay, sketch or drawing)

Photo essay an Effective School Environment

A good school environment is
one that encourages students to
learn. It means that all of the
necessary resources are in place
to support students' learning and
development. Their overall
growth, as well as their good
behavior, social relationships, and
interactions. To keep students
safe while performing various
movements, things should be
organized properly and placed in
appropriate areas. Students'
interest and motivation to learn will be piqued if the campus and its facilities are appealing.
The school should be free of distractions that could obstruct students' learning. There should
be challenging activities available in various facilities, such as the science lab and the TLE lab,
to aid students' learning and development in specific areas such as cooking and proper
experimentation.
Above all, the effectiveness of any school is determined by a variety of factors. Effective
leaders, effective teachers, and an effective environment are all characteristics of an effective
school. Each of these elements has its own characteristics and ideas. And I believe it is
significant.
