Girl Scouts to Celebrate 110 Years!

Girl Scouts of Montana and
Wyoming (GSMW) will celebrate
110 years as an organization with
the kickoff of Girl Scout Week.
The nearly 110-year-old
organization was founded by Juliette
Gordon Low in 1912 when she
started Girl Scouts in her hometown
of Savannah, Georgia. The first
troop was made up of 18 girls who
all shared a sense of curiosity and a
belief that they could do anything.
At a time when women in
the United States couldn’t yet vote
and were expected to stick to strict
social norms, encouraging girls to
embrace their unique strengths and
create their own opportunities was
game-changing.
That small gathering of
girls over 100 years ago ignited a
movement across America where
every girl could unlock her full
potential, find lifelong friends, and
make the world a better place.
Currently, the Girl Scout
Leadership Experience focuses
on four program pillars: Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math
(STEM), Outdoors, Life Skills, and
Entrepreneurship. To celebrate 110
years, GSMW will be hosting four
events throughout Montana and
Wyoming in 2022 with each event
focusing on one of the four pillars.

Scotties setting sights on state berth

Last year Glasgow missed the state tournament by
one place. The Scotties finished third at the Northern
B Divisional held in Wolf Point. Unfortunately the
divisional only took two teams to state and the Scotties
couldn’t challenge Fairfield since the two teams played in
a Friday night semifinal game.
This year the division takes three teams to the State
Class B tournament that will be held at Montana State
University in Bozeman March 10-12.
Glasgow has made five trips to the state tournament,
winning the Class A state championship in 1980. Marj
Connors led the Scotties. The Scotties finished second in
1997 with Marj Markle coaching the squad. Glasgow was
third in 1978 and 81. The other trip was 1984.
Glasgow has won the Northern B once, that was in
1997. The Scotties will take on Cut Bank at 2:30 Thursday.
Malta and Shelby kick off the tournament at 1 p.m. Wolf
Point plays Conrad at 6:30 and Fairfield battles Harlem at
8 p.m.
Malta won the 2B championship with a 51-43 victory
over Wolf Point. Glasgow claimed third place with a 59-16
win over Harlem. Fairfield whipped Cut Bank 53-29 and
Conrad edged Shelby 42-39.
Malta has won 16 divisional championships since
1977. Fairfield has won 12, Conrad three, Cut Bank two,
Glasgow, Harlem and Wolf Point one apiece. Glasgow
joined the Northern B in 1993.
Malta (18-2) has been led by Allison Kunze, Maddie
Williamson, and Addy Anderson. Justine Lamb is the
lone senior on the M-ettes squad. Malta is the defending
divisional champions.
Shelby (6-15) is led by senior Vivi MeDermott, junior
Jori Clary, sophomore Cameron Blevins, and freshman
Adele Lamb. The Coyotes list four seniors on their squad.
Cut Bank (9-10) are led by juniors Kendra Spotted
Bear, Aliyah Cray, and MacKenzie Johnson. The Wolves
are young with only one senior.
“Cut Bank is shorter and quick,” first-year Glasgow
Coach Cami Graham said. “They have good three-point
shooters, so we should have an advantage in the post.
They do shoot the three ball well, so we’re going to have to
extend our defense to get on them.”
Wolf Point (12-8) has four seniors and is led by
seniors Josie Kolstad and Hamyanie Campbell as well as
Jaylee Azure, and J’Elle Garfield.
Conrad (8-14) with four seniors, are led by seniors
Brae Eneboe and Payton Vermulm, and 6-foot sophomore
Talu Eneboe.
Fairfield (14-6) has five seniors, Natalie Spotted Bear,
tori Jones, and Alexis Johnson, all leading the Eagles.
Harlem (7-12) has four seniors and are led by seniors
Taya Trottier and Chloe Messerly.
Graham noted that her players will have to play hard
and play good defense and execute their plays.
“They have done well with those last week,”: said
Graham. “We have to be in the right positions and they
have done well with that. We just have to execute our
offense, then we should be fine.”
Losing to Wolf Point in the district tournament,
Graham felt that may have been a wake-up call. The
Scotties had a tough time hitting their shots and had a
tough time at the foul line.
“I think that game was a good eye opener for them,”
Graham said. “They realize that you have to really focus
and execute. We had a practice that morning and it really
brought them together. You never want to lose a game like
that but maybe it happened for a reason.”
Glasgow has improved since the Christmas break,
winning 12 of the last 15 games. Two of the losses were
against district 2B foes. The Scotties lost to Malta, 38-33,
during the regular season and to Wolf Point, 50-45, in the
tournament. One thing that has helped the Scotties was
Sabrina Harsh, a transfer from Scottsbluff, Neb.
“It added a lot to our team, she’s definitely a really
strong post,” said Graham. “We were able to move
Daley (Aune) out to a forward or a wing. We have great
rebounders so when they do pack it in we can shoot the
ball. We had good shooters. At all times we’re going to
have two strong posts down there.”
Graham also has Carly Nelson inside the paint as a
post. Harsh has been one of the leads since joining the
team. The Scotties has also had Daley Aune, Abrianna
Nielsen, and Tyann Graham leading. And every coach has
dreams of having a 6-footer on their team.
“We don’t get that very often. We’re very glad to have
her,” said Graham.
With the division sending three teams this year the
pressure may be off for the Scotties. They have a dream
of playing at state. Most of them were on the Glasgow
volleyball team that went to state twice.
“They have worked hard for this, so it’s not just the
season they have worked for, they have worked for this
for years,” said Graham. “This group of kids has spent a
lot of time during the off-season playing ball. And they
definitely have earned it. Hopefully they can go out this
weekend and execute and get one of their goals.”
Going to state would be a nice way for the three
seniors to go out.
“ Absolutely,” Graham said. “And with them taking
three teams, if by chance you stumble in a game you can
always come back and win two games. That takes a little
bit of pressure off.”
Introducing Montana’s official app for hunting and fishing

improve customer service and
modernize technology in state
government, Governor Greg
Gianforte announced the launch
of a new mobile app from the
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
FWP’s new app will allow
Montanans to access their hunting
and fishing licenses with their
phone, reducing the need to secure
and carry around paperwork while
they fish and hunt.
The new app, MyFWP,
provides Montana sportsmen
and women a simple, easy way to
store and display licenses, permits,
and digital carcass tags, known as
E-Tags, which can be used in the
field without cellular service.
“Modernizing the way state
government does business allows
us to better serve Montanans and
remains a top priority as we lead
the Montana Comeback,” Gov.
Gianforte said. “I applaud FWP for
bringing this idea to life, and I look
forward to the convenience it will
bring our hunters and anglers.”
FWP has launched the new
mobile app in conjunction with the
start of the new 2022 license year,
which began March 1st. The app
is available to download now in
Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
“This mobile app is a huge
advancement in convenience for
hunters and anglers,” FWP Director
Hank Worsech said. “Anglers can
now display their fishing license
on their smartphone, and hunters
can notch their digital carcass tag
with just a few taps of the app in
the palm of their hand.”
In addition to storing and
displaying licenses and permits
in a digital wallet, the MyFWP
app gives hunters the option to
digitally validate an E-Tag instead
of a traditional paper carcass tag.
This can be done even if the hunter
is out of cell service.
Hunters who purchase
licenses online or at an FWP
office will have the choice
between the two options – digital
or paper – for each transaction
they make. They can’t choose
both, and the decision is final for
the remainder of the license year
for each tag. If a hunter chooses
the digital option, the E-Tag will
be available on their mobile app
to download before they head
into the field.
Even if someone opts for
paper carcass tags, they can still
use the MyFWP app to carry and
view licenses and permits for the
current year and one year prior.
All game animals in Montana that
require a carcass tag are eligible for
digital validation with an E-Tag.
Paddlefish won’t have an E-Tag
option this year.
Licenses and E-Tags will be
accessible out of cellular service if
users are logged into the app and
have downloaded E-Tags to their
mobile device.
