DIGITAL LIBRARY UNIMED

 The Medan State University (Unimed) library is one of the best libraries in Indonesia.
The status is supported by new facilities and buildings occupied since September 2013. The
library which has an area of 13,585 m2 then changed its name to Digital Library, which is
located on Jalan William Iskandar, Pasar V, Kenangan Baru, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli
Serdang Regency.

The Technical Implementation Unit of the Medan State University Library was
established along with the establishment of the main institution, namely IKIP Medan. At first it
was a library at the USU FKIP Faculty. In 1959 the library was led by Mrs. Fondoh Hoeres. In
1969 the new library occupied a separate building with a size of 800 m2 with two floors. The
leadership element changed in 1962, led by Mrs. Hajani Adnan. In 1963 switched to Drs. M.
Simatupang and in 1965 the leadership was handed over to Drs. J. Tumanggor and in 1977 the
library leader was Drs. M. Tambunan.

In accordance with the issuance of PP 30 of 1980, the status of the library becomes a
Technical Implementing Unit, where the Head of the Library Technical Implementation Unit is
directly responsible to the Chancellor with daily coaching carried out by the Assistant Chancellor
I.

In August 1984 the Head of the Library at that time, Drs. M. Tambunan, following an
assignment to study in the United States, the library was led by Drs. Belling Siregar. And since
May 1986 after Drs. M. Tambunan returned from his study assignment, the head of the IKIP
Medan Library Technical Implementation Unit led again.

In 1987 the IKIP Medan Library Technical Implementation Unit moved to the new
campus location, Jl. Willem Iskandar Pasar V Medan Estate, by occupying a three-story building
area of 3,000 m2. Because the IKIP Medan campus occupies three places, namely the old
campus, Jl. Merbau, campus Jl. Students and New Campus Jl. Willem Iskandar Pasar V then the
Library Technical Implementation Unit took a policy, since 1990 opened a library in each faculty
called the Faculty Reading Room, this is intended to bring the collection closer to library users,
especially for users who are still far from the Library Technical Implementation Unit on the new
campus.

On August 15, 1989, the leadership of the IKIP Medan Library Unit was handed over
from Drs. M. Tambunan, MLS to Drs. Belling Siregar. In 1992 the head of the library took part
in a study assignment in England, so the library was led by Dra. Ratnawati Dora, SIP until 1994.
After Drs. Belling Siregar, MLib. After completing the study assignment, the Library Technical
Implementation Unit was re-led until 1998.

On July 14, 1998 the head of the Library Technical Implementation Unit was handed
over from Drs. Belling Siregar, M.Lib. To Dra. Ratnawati Dora, SIP until now. In September
2013 the Technical Implementation Unit of the Medan State University Library moved to a new
building of the Medan State University Digital Library Building with an area of 13,585 m2. On
Saturday, December 14, 2013, Medan State University Digital Library Building was inaugurated
by the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Prof. Dr. Ir. KH.
Muhammad Nuh, DEA accompanied by Unimed Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ibnu Hajar MSi, Vice
Rector I Prof. Dr. Khairil Anshari, M.Pd Vice Rector II Drs. Chairul Azmi, M.Pd. Director
General of Higher Education Prof. Dr. Djoko Santoso and Head of the Human Resources
Development Agency for Education and Culture and Education Quality Assurance Prof. Dr.
Syawal Gultom, M.Pd.

The Unimed Digital Library building consists of 5 floors with better facilities. The
facilities for the new Medan State University Digital Library Building are; The 1st floor consists
of: Locker Room, Discussiom Room, Book Shop, Reading Room, Borrowing, Returns, Short
Loan Collections, Reference Collections, Serial Issues (Journals, Magazines, Newspapers),
Information, Mushola. The 2nd floor consists of: Administration Head Room, Standard
Collection, Discussion Room. The 3rd floor consists of: Scientific Work Collection Room
(Thesis, Thesis, Dissertation, Research Report), Technical Services, Library Automation. The
4th floor consists of: Meeting Room, Seminar Room, Internet Room. The 5th floor consists of:
Multimedia, (Home Theater 3D, Audio Visual), Cubic.

The name of the Medan State University Digital Library Building, which is installed in
the new library building, is a tough challenge for libraries to create digital libraries that are able
to compete nationally and internationally.
