3.6 CONNECTIONS
A. Provide a sheet metal transition not exceeding 15 degrees when connecting to automatic control
dampers.
B. Provide sheet metal transition not exceeding 15 degrees when connecting to equipment
connections from the duct sizes indicated on the mechanical drawings.
3.7 ROUTING
B. Install ductwork to conserve headroom and interfere as little as possible with the use of space.
Avoid routing ductwork at elevations capable of causing occupant hazards.
E. Install ductwork straight and plumb. Springing or forcing ductwork into place is not permitted.
G. Provide easements where ductwork conflicts with piping and structure. Where easement
exceeds 10 percent of duct area, split duct into two ducts maintaining original area. Use of
easements requires written request and approval for each specific location.
3.8 CLEANING
A. Cover and seal openings in ductwork during construction to prevent inside of ducts from getting
dirty.
B. Where duct systems are considered dirty, as determined by Owner, clean duct systems with
HEPA filtered vacuum machines.
1. Ductwork shall be cleaned by a certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) who is
currently registered with the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA).
2. Comply with requirements of NADCA standard ACR 2006.
3. Remove and dispose of visible, dirt, dust and debris. After cleaning, weight of debris,
when collected per Appendix A of NADCA 1992-01, shall not exceed 1.0 milligram per
100 square centimeters.
C. Protect equipment which may be harmed by excessive dirt with filters, or bypass during
cleaning.
D. Provide access doors in ductwork for cleaning purposes. Comply with Section 233300, Duct
Accessories.
A. Maintain net free area of duct dimensions indicated on drawings. Increase duct dimensions as
necessary to compensate for liner thickness.
C. Adhere duct liner with 100 percent coverage of liner adhesive at liner contact surface area.
D. Coat edges of liner with adhesive. Neatly butt liner without gaps at transverse joints and coat
with adhesive.
E. Fold and compress liner in corners of rectangular duct sections or cut and fit to assure butted
edge overlapping. Longitudinal joints in duct liner shall not occur except at corners of ducts
unless the size of duct and standard liner product dimensions make it necessary.
F. Locate mechanical fasteners with respect to interior dimensions and regardless of airflow
direction according to figure 2-19 of SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards. Interior
widths of duct not exceeding 8 inches do not require mechanical fasteners.
H. Metal nosings that are either channel or zee profile or are integrally-formed from duct wall shall
be securely installed over transversely oriented liner edges facing airstream at fan discharge and
at any interval of lined duct preceded by unlined duct. In addition, where velocities exceed
2500 fpm metal nosing shall be used on upstream edges of liner at every transverse joint.
I. Where dampers, turning vane assemblies or other devices are placed inside of lined duct or
fittings, install metal hat sections. Secure metal hat sections to duct wall with bolts, screws,
rivets or welds. Hat section height shall be same as liner thickness. Insulate void behind hat
sections.
3.10 IDENTIFICATION
A. Provide identification not more than 50 feet apart for straight runs.
C. Provide identification within 3 feet of each wall, floor, roof or ceiling penetration.
D. Place identifications where easily read. On overhead ductwork, place identification below the
horizontal centerline.
F. Provide identification on exposed ductwork and ductwork in concealed areas, including ceiling
plenums, shafts and chases.

Cross-break or use mechanical transverse beading for sizes 12 inches and larger. Duct
beading used to stiffen the ducts shall be at least 0.0625 inch deep at the center of the
bead and not more than 0.375 inch wide at the base of the bead.
Construct bends, and elbows with a duct centerline radius of not less than 1.5 times duct size.Where it is not
possible to use 1.5 radius rectangular elbows, use a radius elbow of 1 times the duct centerline or a mitered
elbow with turning vanes. (See Duct Diagram)
Turning vanes in all 90 degree mitered elbows. The vanes shall be the single fin type, with a 2 inch inside
radius for small vanes. Double fin type, with a 4.5 inch inside radius for large vanes. Use small vanes spaced
no more than 1.5 inches apart for ducts up to 18 inches wide, and 3.25 inches apart for ducts through 36
inches wide. For ducts larger than 36 inches, use double fin type vanes, spaced at no more than 3.25 inches
apart. Shop-fabricated turning vanes are not acceptable, unless they are machine shaped,
punched and assembled. No vanes in elbows less than 90 degrees.Transitions with the top of the duct flat.
Construct metal ducts with joints mechanically rigid, airtight (required to satisfy leakage class A-C), braced
and stiffened so as not to breathe, rattle, vibrate, or sag. Seal duct joints, seams and connections with
sealant during fabrication.

Acoustic Lining
The standard acoustic lining for ductwork is a semi-rigid fibreglass board with a perforated foil
facing (HDP). Alternatively, a black matt facing (BMF) may be employed.
Acoustic lining may suffer minor damage in transport and handling. Small cuts, tears or abrasions may
be repaired with silver tape for HDP facing or PVA adhesive (e.g. Ados AD20, Fullers X3801) for a BMF
facing, depending upon the insulation facing type.
The occasional exposure to wet weather during transportation or pre-building enclosure conditions
in new construction will not necessarily impair the performance of the liner. In such cases drying or
other corrective measures recommended by the manufacturer should be followed. However
corrective action should be taken immediately to avoid damaging the liner fastenings (i.e. corrosion
failure at the pin weld).
Ductwork Testing
The pressure testing of installed ductwork is an occasional requirement of the design engineer. This
requirement should be kept under control, and testing, where agreed, should be carried out in
accordance with SMACNA or HVCA procedures. Active steps should be taken to ensure that the
ducting is airtight and is erected competently regardless of testing requirements.
Generally SMACNA does not recommend the testing of duct systems where the operating pressure is
less than 750Pa (3" wg).

General Information
Torque
The torque values in this catalog are to be used as a guide only. The relationship between the applied torque or
torque wrench reading and the actual tension created in the bolt may be substantially different. Important factors
affecting torque-tension relationships include friction under the bolt head or nut, hole tolerances, and torque
wrench tolerances. Accuracy of many commercial torque wrenches may vary as much as plus or minus 25%.

Beam clamps offered in this section are designed to provide attachment of hanger rods to structural members without drilling or
welding. A wide range of types and sizes are available for various applications.
Materials
Carbon Steel, Malleable Iron and Forged Steel are used in the manufacturing of beam clamps and accessories. Stainless steel and
other materials are available.
Finishes
The standard finishes for mechanical supports are plain steel (oil coated) sometimes referred to as black and Electro-Galvanized
Zinc (ASTM B633 SC3). Hot-Dip Galvanized After Fabrication (ASTM A123), Red Primer, Plastic Coating and DURA GREEN™.
Other special coatings are available upon request.
Note: Due to the design of some products, (threads, connecting hardware, swivels, etc.) items may
or may not be uniformly coated with special finishes. In some cases, the hanger itself may be coated, however, the hardware may
be supplied Electro-Plated, copper plated, or in stainless steel.
