Leading up to D-Day
Doug Stebleton (1983 Glasgow High School grad who in 2010
produced the film documentary Mother of Normandy, as well as
a coffee table book and is now available as an e-book) arrived in
Normandy on Wednesday to take in the ceremonies leading up
to the 78th anniversary of D-Day. On June 6, 1944, more than
160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-
fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches
of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the
operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than
full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported
the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-
hold in Continental Europe. Paratroopers of the U.S. 82nd and
101st Airborne Divisions, the British 6th Airborne Division, the 1st
Canadian Parachute Battalion, and other attached Allied units took
part in the assault. Pictured above is Doug's photos taken Thursday
of a ceremony at the monument which is "In Remembrance of the
Airborne Spirit. Numbering more than 13,000 men, the parachute
troops were assigned what was probably the most difficult task of
the initial operation - a night jump behind enemy lines five hours
before the coastal landings. Many were injured and killed during
the attack, and much of their equipment was lost, but the brave
paratroopers fought fiercely, causing confusion among the German
commanders and keeping the German’s troops occupied.
Valley View Home proudly boasted a balanced budget in
2019. Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic devastated the
skilled nursing home's fiscal picture.

Prices increased. Needs increased. Stress increased.

As our Home works to create a path to longevity, we are

asking Valley County voters to approve another temporary,
3-year levy.

Give us a fighting chance to return to our pre-pandemic

success. Vote “Yes” to Valley View Home on
your June 7 primary ballot.

Kilometer Zero
This ceremony happened in Sainte Mere Eglise
in front of the town hall (Doug sent this photo
shortly before three o'clock this morning, they're
eight hours ahead. At nine o'clock this morning,
it was 5:00 p.m. in Sainte Mere Eglise). The
object they're putting the wreaths on is called
"Kilometer Zero". It's called Kilometer Zero
because this is where they started the March
to Berlin after D-Day. Also, the names on the
plaque includes about 60 civilians from this town
that died on D-Day and it's also in remembrance
of them. Standing right behind Doug when he
took this picture was Three Star General Chris
Donahue. He was the last U.S. service member
to leave Hamid Karzai International Airport in
Kabul, Afghanistan, on Aug. 30, 2021. At the
time he was the commanding general of the
82nd Airborne Division. Nicknamed "Flatliner",
he is now Commanding General, XVIII Airborne
Corps and Fort Bragg, Fort Bragg, North Carolina
and Operation European Assure, Deter, and
Reinforce, Germany.
