Still saying ‘PECK YES!’
I am writing in response to the recent letter printed
comparing the high price of eggs to the cost of raising
backyard chickens.
The message of that letter seemed to be that raising
chickens doesn’t make sense because the costs are
higher than the value of the eggs produced. While this
may be true, at this very moment, the cost of having
chickens decreases the longer you have them. There is
also so much more value to having chickens than just
saving money on eggs.
Chickens are wonderful pets, and as a society we
don’t interrogate the cost/value of our other pets. Dogs
and cats are expensive to keep, and no one expects to
earn money back from their cat or dog. How many
other ways do we spend money on our animals? To say
we shouldn’t raise chickens because it costs more than it
saves raises the question of why do we do anything we
enjoy at all?
Even the best fishermen on Fort Peck would be
better off buying fillets at the grocery store when you
factor in fuel, equipment and hours spent to catch
a few ounces of walleye. We also don’t ask hunters to
licenses, all for a few pheasants or deer. Wouldn’t it be
cheaper to go to the store and just buy regular meat?
Probably!
But that’s not the point. Hunting is a pastime, an
activity people enjoy doing, in much the same way raising
animals is a pastime. The case for chickens is just the
same. They can be our pets–they provide companionship,
recreation, and as a bonus they have the added benefit of
an “egg-ceptionally” delicious food source. Suggesting
that backyard bird owners are doing it solely to save
money on eggs is almost entirely missing the point.
So I and many others still say Peck YES!

Technically the Montana High School Association
reintroduced girls basketball in the fall of 1972, making
this last fall the 50th Anniversary since the girls started
playing hoops. Girls were playing basketball back in the
1940s and 1950s, but there wasn’t an organized league

Montana was 1897 when the Fort Shaw Indian School

Fifty small and large teams played that first year
with 70 more joining the following year.
Anaconda beat Deer Lodge 35-29 for the 1973-74
crown. Circle beat Great Falls 59-52 for third.
In 1974 MHSA split the girls into Class A and
Class B. Great Falls beat Chinook 63-39 and Philipsburg
beat Absarokee 35-25 for the crown. Outlook and
Whitewater played in the Class B tournament.
Outlook would win back-to-back championships,
defeating St. Labre 45-28 and Philipsburg 48-28 in 1975-
76 and 1976-77. The Blue Jays were led by Sandy Selvig.
Glasgow made its first trip to state in 1978-77. The
Scotties would finish third in 1977-78, defeating Eureka
38-36.
In 1977 the girls broke into the current four-class
system. The first AA champion was Great Falls CMR
over Great Falls, 38-34, Glendive beat Whitefish 33-29

Brockton’s Kayla Lambert scored 66 points in a
game to set a state record that still stands.
Since the start of girls hoops Malta has been the
most dominant, winning a record 19 Class B titles.
Fairfield would set the record for the most consecutive
wins with 120.
Opheim won three straight Class C championships
from 1982-84. The Vikings beat Twin Bridges 47-42,
Park City 61-32 and Fromberg 52-44 for the wins. Gwen
Dighans was one of many athletes that led the Vikings.
Glasgow won its lone crown in 1980, beating Glendive
46-32 for the Class A title. Marj Connors led the Scotties.

to inflationary programs instituted by the Biden Mis-

of four young people. All were stabbed while they slept.
No arrests as yet. I suppose now the government will
want to ban all knives. Or ban sleeping. Or ban movie
theaters, all schools, churches, the “Strip” in Las Vegas
and any other place where gun or knife violence has
occurred.

Intelligence.
On the Who The Hell Cares Front... Dr Fauci
has officially retired from 50 years of government
dis-service. His last job paid him more than what the
President makes and look at the turmoil Fauci caused
during the Wuhan Crisis. Was he worth $460,000 + -
a few bucks - per year? Fauci has been a government
bureaucrat for more than 55 years, Fauci and his wife’s
household net worth skyrocketed during the pandemic,
from about $5 million to $12.6 million. Jeez, Louise,
how do you supposed that happened? And his pension
will be nearly $415,000 per year, the largest in federal
history. Doesn’t that give you a fuzzy warm feeling.
Have you noticed a drastic change in your
heating bill so far? See, what the deal is is that the
Public Service Commission has, again granted those
fledgling companies like Montana Dakota Utilities and
Northwestern Electric huge increases in what you and
I pay to keep warm in Winter. This year you can expect
to pay double what you have been used to before the Joe
Biden, “No more oil or coal era.” We sure need to take
care of the shareholders in those companies!
My question for you today is this: can the “Castle
Doctrine” be applied to the southern border of the
United States? There are nine border states....and yes
Matilda, I count Florida as a border state. They are
already being invaded by illegal criminals. Politicians
and bleeding-heart Democrats have been shying away
from the word “invasion’ when describing the border
“crisis.” Governor of Texas Greg Abbott finally broke
the mold and described the incursion of illegals into the
US as an “INVASION.” I first used that word back in
2019 in an article I called “The Invasion.” What happens
when the border states fill up to capacity with illegals?
Then the next tier of states become “Border States” Then
the next tier and so on. Under the Castle Doctrine,
when the invasion threatens our great state can we, as
Montana homeowners stand, well armed, should-to-
shoulder at our border and repel the invaders by any
and all means? Think about it.
And lastly, the RR is holding Americans hostage
with their insipid demand for more sick days. The
US could lose $2 Billion dollars per day if the strike
happens.” Does the time of year have anything to do
with this threatened strike? Duh!
